"You can only shoot, as well as you can see".
My scope of choice: Leupold VX-3i, 1" tube, 3.5-10x40, with CDS and WindPlex reticle.
The particulars: I will likely mount this on my Rem 700, 30/06. I have done the math on Hornady's excellent (and free! You young guys have no idea how lucky you are with today's technology) ballistic calculator, available on their website. If I owned my buddy's land, and would be using his shooting house on the power lines regularly, I would have chosen the VX-3i 4.5-14x50, with Side Focus, CDS, and WindPlex reticle. Since this will be used for both woods and field, occasionally at my buddy's, I decided 3.5-10x40 was more appropriate for my purposes. $450 street price is enough for now.
3.5x is a touch high magnification for woods use, but is do-able. The 10x will work great for 400+ yard shots. The 1" tube gives me 52 MOA total adjustment, for both windage and elevation. That means I can get up to 600 yards of usable range, using a 100 yard zero, with the right bullet (more on that in another thread), in less than the 15 MOA single turn of the CDS elevation turret, and since it doesn't have zero lock, I won't lose my place on the dial like would be possible if I needed to use more than 1 complete turn of the turret. Wind correction is compensated for by the WindPlex reticle, which consists of a total of 20 hash marks on the horizontal cross hair, 10 on each side of the vertical cross hair. Each hash mark is graduated for 1 MOA at 10x, for a total of 10 MOA wind correction each, left or right. This compensates for enough windage correction for a 20 mph cross wind out to 600 yards with a bullet of adequate BC in a 30-06, or similar (i.e. 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, etc.) The 40mm objective lens gives me a 4mm exit pupil @ 10x, useful for NY legal shooting hours, sunrise to sunset. I look forward to ordering my CDS dial, once I decide on the bullet I want to use, so I can send the info to Leupold and get my dial cut. That 3 week wait time will seem like an eternity. In the meantime, the included MOA elevation dial is useful, with a cheat sheet, for whatever bullet I choose.
In short, a nice all-around deer hunting scope, and a great value, useful for medium ranges up to 600 yards, and doubles as a 'poor man's' precision scope on steel plates out to the same distance, for practice.
