The M1 Garand explained for everyone with one simple question

I shot one 20 years ago. Bought one from the CMP in 1998, but never got around to shooting it. It has a huge following and fun to shoot, I am just not into shooting vintage rifles.

The thing is a pleasure to shoot. Don't rob yourself of the experience. Nothing will break - the thing is an absolute tank. I'm at 5 CMP rifles so far. ;-) Kind of afraid to shoot my Gewehr-43; but I am not shy about taking out a Garand or 1903A3.

I am kicking myself for not getting M1 carbine and a few Springfields from the CMP. I didn't think they are going to run out. I don't shoot vintage rifles, but I love to own them. I visit North store every year when I go to Nationals. My last purchase from CMP was new in the box Daisy 853 air rifle for $200.00. They also sell used reconditioned for around $100.00. They were overruns from JROTC or ROTC marksmanship training program. With simple trigger modification and refinishing of the stock it can become a sweet target air rifle. Great training tool for offhand shooting and fun to shoot. I shoot it 2-3 times a week in my basement.

South Korea is waiting on a POTUS to give the thumbs up and there are 100,000 more in cosmoline ready to come to CMP. I'm hoping Killery or Trump give the thumbs up. Honestly I am shocked Ovomit didn't; considering he gave the thumbs up to 10,000 of the WW II vintage 1911 sidearms.

Right now CMP has some epic Garand's in stock. They have the RM1SPECIALWRA (new Criterion barrel, new walnut furniture, all new USGI parts, etc) and they have the M1D sniper. The RM1DR Sniper for $900 is an amazing deal and I am probably gonna road trip to Camp Perry and pick up 2 or 3 around Thanksgiving time when I have a few weeks off. On the RM1DR the scope base is already there; so all you need to do is find a reman scope from WW II or buy a new reproduction scope. You will also want a new leather strap, and new cheek piece; and then the thing is totally ready to live the dream.

Best $395 you will ever spend at the CMP. But bring a head-space tool (looks like a rifle round with markings on it). Or if you love one of them even though the head space sucks; CMP will sell you a new barrel right there on the spot for something like $125. Here's my favorite C&R:

Look towards the bottom of that section on their page regarding "Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization." You'll see:

The Garand Collector's Association is a CMP Affiliated Club. You can download a Garand Collector's Association Application Form.​

So...for $25, you can join here: Garand Collector's Association Application Form.

If I was going to purchase, I'd consider that $25 and "admission fee" to the purchasing section.

Membership in the GCA meets one of the qualifications
set forth by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) to
purchase weapons and ammunition from them.
Each week a complete and current electronic copy of the
GCA membership data set is forwarded to CMP. CMP can
verifiy your membership this way. You’ll also receive a
wallet-size Membership Card when you join GCA that
contains your membership number and it can be used as
proof of membership.

We are presently the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s
largest affiliated club. Membership in the GCA allows you
to purchase M1 rifles direct from the CMP.

It's not a stopping point. They will take anyone's DD-214's and if you don't have that they had applications to join the "Garand Collector Society" for like $20 and then poof - here's your rifle.

That's kind of bogus. But most folks with a C&R also know the local FFL's and can get the thing dropped there for $20. And you are sure no more CMP mailing to C&R's?

They have tons of the M1D sniper models for under a grand. I can't use those because I am left eye dominant.

$935; but yeah. OTOH for $935 its the sniper model. Or hang tough and see what shakes with those 100,000 Korean give-backs from the old lend-lease program. I got all mine for $395 and $495 and those were really nice and extremely accurate. Good headspace and the barrel crowns were perfect. The batch from Korea will be that high quality or better.

I understand what it takes to get one but I just don't want to have to join something and then give all other types of proof to get a rifle. I already get enough unwanted crap from the NRA. I'm fine with just having it sent to an FFL and then doing the normal song and dance. I don't understand why they have this bizarre way of doing things. Well yes I do. More money. Not a cash grab. ODCMP is beholden to congress and the club you join probably is to comply to some proof of being in the unorganized militia. It is what it is. Fulton Armory and others will sell an M1 Garand but want way more than the CMP.

That one time joining of that Garand club is fairly innocuous. Even if you don't plan to go back to Camp Perry or Fort Anniston; you inevitably end up back there sooner or later for those 1,000 round wooden crates of 30-06 or will be back there to buy a 1911 once they finish rating them and getting it all ready. It's a long ride, but getting to Camp Perry is only a day trip.
