This is literally being at war with someone but trying to play semantics by saying "we're not killing/shooting them so we're not at war".
We are openly and proudly arming Ukraine to kill Russians and providing intelligence to sink ships and kill generals.

A very logical and likely "next" series of events is when Russia sees a usaf rc-135 or navy P-8 Poseidon patrol plane over the black sea monitoring the Russian fleet, they don't want their ships being attacked and having ships sunk and sailors killed so they pre-emptively attack the us plane to avoid intelligence being passed in which will lead to dead Russians. The US and NATO will obviously reply. There are likely us stealth jets running combat patrols over eastern Europe as I'm typing this so it's likely they would immediately return fire and likely wherever the Russian plane took off from or where the surface to air missiles were launched from also gets retaliation strikes against it. Now we are at a point where the US and Russia have actively killed each other and are not even at a formal state of war. At which point one or both sides are left deciding whether to immediately seek a cease fire or contemplating a sudden first strike to eliminate the others ability to engage them. That's an increasing realistic scenario that could unfold at any moment.
And I'm not pro Russia or a Russian apologist. I'm trying to think this through logically and pragmatically.

We were in Vietnam for who the hell knows why. Our decision makers clearly knew it wasn't an existential threat. It was on the other side of the earth.
Russia for their rhetoric genuinely believes (or at least states) that this is an existential threat to their country's future. This is all occurring within a couple hundred of miles of Russias capital.
Vietnam was in totally different era of military technology.
Our weapons, our reconosance. I guess we had a Ukrainian push the button on our command. Maybe not even that.

Russia has no right to demand Ukraine not join NATO. Any more than they can demand Finland or Sweden not join. Or are you suggesting Putin would be justified in invading Finland now that it looks like that want in ?
The Ukraine invasion happened because Biden practically said we would not get involved.
If he had said "we will support the defense of Ukraine with arms and money" it might not have.
If he had pledged airsupport, nobody would have died on either side, because Russia would have stayed home.
