But that's not even the right metric.
Legitimate government authority comes from the consent of the governed. Does the average Ukranianian *want* to be Russian ? Of course not. That means Russia has no legitimate business there.
Russia didn't OWN Ukraine. Ukraine reunited with Russia in 1653 by its own free will. At the time it had only 15% of the territory it left with Soviet Union. People in Crimea are very happy with their return to Russia. People in Donbass and even Cherson applying for Russian citizenship in mass numbers.

Poles and Ukrainians never got along, which was the reason for reunification with Russia.

Yes, but in Eastern Ukraine it was reported that 49% of the population did. Who knows what the percentage was just before the Russian invasion.
The Donbas region is where it's interesting. A good portion of the population has Russian ethnic ancestry and family ties and speaks Russian. That is the 1 region of Ukraine where it makes sense that they genuinely not propoganda want to be a part of Russia

Correction, 2014. Thats when the breakaway regions did not accept the legitimacy of the new elections which put zelenski in power. They claimed The elections were not valid. Hence the conflict in those regions as Ukraine tried to regain control . for 8 years there was fighting going on in the region.

I have to say, it looks like the Russian offensive is stalling out. I mean, they're still making some headway, but If they cant keep thier ammo supplies moving freely , its going to be a problem . They will probably be able to secure the last few citys in the Donbass, but the rapid drive to Dnipro might not happen it the supplys are short. They are having supply problems in Kershon and now they have this nuclear plant being shelled by ukraine which could bring NATO or UN into the war . I would think that The Russians would be forced to disperse thier ammo supplies throughout an area instead of warehouseing them in central locations . I dont know, Lets see what happens at the UN meeting tommorrow. Could be a turning point in the war.

They will simply adopt similar tactics against supply lines from Eastern Europe on both sides of the border to mirror what NATO is doing to them.
