Thinking About Mounting a Holster to Back of Nightstand

The reason for this, is my little one is tall enough to reach the top of the nightstand but not old enough to understand to leave it alone. We usually keep the door closed but when my wife is putting laundry away and what not, kid could grab it. Probably wouldn't get the safety off or strong enough to pull the trigger but never say never.

I dont like the idea of a safe and fumbling with codes or finger prints.

This would only be until the kid is old enough to be taught.

Pros: out of sight, still easily accessible

Cons: not as easy as grabbing off the top of the nightstand.

I also have a concern it might collect more dust.

Suck it up and get a lockbox.

You've got a exponentially higher chance of your kid finding an unsecured pistol than you do needing your pistol with less notice than it takes to run a fingerprint reader.

Kids will find EVERYTHING!!

Something like this on the back of the nightstand would be quick and out of sight.

From my experience you will re-think your flawed strategy and carry after within your home if you survive a home invasion. I too at one time fell for the idea that having self defense tools in the home was enough. It is not.

I suggest carrying 365 / 24 with more effective tools staged, having pre-conceived plans, training for those plans, continuously considering "what's the worst thing that can happen and how do we prevent or defend against this", get as healthy / strong / fast / smart / alert and prepared as you can.

For what it is worth this forum is not always about politics or memes but has had previous posts with good insights of maintaining PPE within reach while showering, keeping nightstand PPE within fast safe access while sleeping, carrying while running / cycling / working out / working in yard, securing your home with cameras / lighting / entry doors / secure locks / surveillance cameras / alarm systems / back up power / gun safes / storing ammo / concealed carry / self defense laws / securing 2A legal representation, etc. Visit as many ranges as often as you can, enjoy your like minded friends, look at 22lr to save ammo costs, and I recommend Mantisx dry fire products.

In regards to the OP, there are several holster manufacturers with inexpensive good weapon securing products that can be velcro mounted on nearly any surface. I use Crossbreed and Pit Viper but have handled many other good options

Magnetic key, so no combination to fumble in the dark. I do wish it had the option of red LEDs instead so it doesn't ruin your night vision. I don't have anything like this (no kids and cats don't care), but been meaning to get one.

Pics of a night stand I made a while back. No drawer. To open, there's a lever under the top. Slide the lever about 1.5 inches and the hidden "drawer" drops down. Uncomplicated quick & easy access exposing my Ruger Mk2 Gov Target. BTW, I have bigger fire power on the way LOL. The stand is made of Ash, baseball bat material. So it's very hard and durable. And the wood grain is beautiful, to me.

One of the magnetic thingies would have been much quicker, easier, and less $$ too. But I needed a night stand so this is what I came up with.

There are no kids in the house. If grand kids or someone other than trusted people show up, the little .380 on top of the night stand disappears.

You might not like my answer but its my opinion,

With young kids they will find everything. They are curious about everything. No matter what you tell yourself you're always going to be nervous about kids finding it or even if they know it's there and they are told to leave it alone well, they think Dad is awesome and want to be like dad and do things dad does....

Get a lockbox for your night stand. I can get mine open in about 3 seconds just hitting 4 buttons in a sequence it's super easy. It gives me peace of mind my kids can't get into it and yet still keeps my gun nearby and readily accessible.

If you had responsible teens who listen and are respectful etc then maybe the holster idea might be doable. But with little ones I think it has more cons than pros.

Only keeping guns locked in a safe in the closet is not a realistic approach to responding to a home invasion you won't be able to react quickly enough. The immediate access quick lockbox is the way to go for speed, security and peace of mind.

If your bedroom where you sleep is on the second floor, I'd go for a lockbox. By the time someone gets to you, the time would be to your advantage.

If you live on the ground floor, well, that depends on the layout of your house and how secure you leave your house.

Unless the criminal has a floor plan or has scoped out the floor plan of your house, it's generally a maze. Criminals are typically stupid and in a rush.

Typically no James Bond type shit will be happening.

I agree kids will find everything and don’t be so sure they can’t take the safety off or pull the trigger. Kids will try very hard to get at things and accomplish things they can’t do.
People are stupid and my family allowed my nephew with all sorts of issue to play with a BB gun because they thought the same. I was standing next to my dad and the kid with the BB gun and he wasn’t my responsibility but before anyone could react the kid turned the gun around, pointed it at his forehead and pulled the trigger. It was empty thankfully and yes I should have put an end to it prior to this point but it’s complicated. After that I was asked to teach him how to shoot and I would “forget” to bring my .22 when they were there and it never happened. He has low muscle tone and was maybe 3 so you’d be surprised.
Sometimes there isn’t a great answer. Only thing you could do is put it up higher and out of reach but even that’s a bit risky and make sure there isn’t a step stool that can be used.

Newer safes/lock boxes that have codes and finger scanners are actually fast to open, the milliseconds it takes to open them will seem worth it in the long run, especially with a kid in the house. Just get a safe/lock box and know that it is, safe.
If you're worried that codes or sensors are to hard to deal with at night, sit and practice opening them in the night with no lights off and your wife pounding on the door. They will become muscle memory quickly.

In the end, it's up to you of course but I know what I would do and most of us here would do, that have kids.

Hell yeah little kids are monkeys. They climb up and out of their cribs at like 18months and keep climbing things ever since.

Thinking that you are putting things up high out of reach isn't stopping them. When my youngest was like 2.5 she was dragging chairs around to use as a stool to climb up on counters and cupboards to get things.

I have one next to my bed with the anti theft cable around a bedpost......I keep the key hidden nearby.
Kids do handle everything...at 10 I had total access to my late Grandfathers 1911, trap door carbine, '03, sharps, etc.......best toys ever !!!!

Any convenient method is potentially unsafe, but if you have the key and cable the box.......kids cannnot take it outside to fuck with.
I can guarantee a holster on the back of the head board is not safe.

Remember, I as a child........... I am out there YET....... fuck, we can drive at 8-10!!! At ten, we are soldier level smart....ME kids get an AK at ten.
