Y'know I'm curious. Is the subtext of the OP along the lines of-
"I don't really dig the SCR but I do dig the Mini 14 but I'm not supposed to like the Mini 14 as much. Is something wrong with me?"
-If so, screw that! I don't think the Mini 14 does anything better than an AR but that doesn't take personal preference into account and the former statement doesn't mean the Mini 14 isn't still a great rifle, it is. So if that really is your preference get one and be happy.
I'd say keep the scr. Or joun us over here in the filthy Communist corner and get a Saiga Sporter. They can be rough to find in .223 but I love mine.
I think you over thought that. What are your thoughts on thinking?Y'know I'm curious. Is the subtext of the OP along the lines of-

Yes. Just get yourself a mini14 and own both. If you feel you need to dump a gun you don't use from your collection to justify it, I'd say it's worth it. The mini is expensive but it is a nice rifle and while it doesn't really compete with the AR, it is a very nice alternative in the face of restrictive states such as NY.Na, there’s not really subtext I’m just running out of space and have too many I don’t shoot. I have no shooting experience with the mini but it does seem to attract a lot of hate, usually when compared to full featured ARs in free states; I was just curious about people’s experiences/opinions between these specific setups in NY context. My SCR has been good, with only one FTF, I guess I just don’t like the manual of arms and have been eyeing a mini for a while. The SCR top charging handle, mag release etc. works fine on a standard AR but feels out of place on a traditionally stocked rifle. I know it can be replaced by side charging uppers and ambi mag releases but I’m trying not to drop too much more money into it.
After thinking it over though, I would regret selling the SCR. It’s kind of an oddball gun that you can appreciate even if you don’t live in NY/Cali. I’m gonna make the smart choice and just own both and buy a bigger safe.
I actually was lucky enough to finally pick up a Saiga in 7.62x39 with a 16 inch barrel NIB mid last year. It was $800 but compared to what I saw similar configured used Saigas going for on GB, I felt like it wasn’t going to get any cheaper for new Saigas. I put a wooden stock and forend on it. It’s a little heavier and longer now but the grip has a sharper angle which I like and it looks nicer. Also put a tritium front post but it was too fat to get a good sight picture. Great gun.
