Thought Experiment: Online Gun Buying

Just a fun thought experiment I'd like to hear your opinion on.

If tomorrow a switch was flipped and NICS checks went away and "Online Gun Buying" became the media nightmare of actually ordering a gun online and having it shipped to your door, what impact do you think that would have on the country?

Would you support that if it were a real proposal?

It would make no difference to the country. I've yet to see a determined criminal who was stopped because he couldn't pass a NICS check.They can mail order guns in Canada, and there isn't blood running in the streets.

The damage it would do to my bank account would be staggering however.

You mean back to the pre NFA era when you could order a full auto Tommy gun shipped COD to your door from the Sears Roebuck catalog ?

It would be glorious. No major changes in crime, gang bangers going to bang regardless. The increase in freedom would have a contagious effect however. Lots of other infringements would soon fall.

I think you would find a decrease in a lot of crime as people who have no interest in allowing the .gov to link them with gun ownership would then buy the means to protect themselves and their families.

Criminals would quickly become an endangered species.

I can't picture criminals and gang members browsing online looking for just the right gun. They would continue to steal their weapons or buy any hunk of shit (Hi-Point) in a back alley somewhere. I think the freedom it would give us good guys would be pretty exciting. It would really make it easy to pick up some nice finds you came across. We might even feel like actual free people.

More realistically, I think the NICS check should be waived for anyone who holds a valid pistol permit. I know some states do this already. It would apply for all gun purchases, not just pistols. We are vetted more than pretty much anyone else. Give us our shit!

Never underestimate perps. 80% lowers have been showing up in crimes lately, especially the P80 Glocks. If I remember correctly, there was a thread about it here.

Good people should be able to order guns over the internet. The businesses shipping them would definitely come up with some sort of vetting system on their own to limit liability. I’m sure step one would be “no products shipped to NY, NJ, CT, CA or DC.”

Great question. I think the difference would be statistically insignificant. The two things I think that would have the biggest difference is a change in the way the media portrays guns and the elimination of gun free zones.

But don't bet me started on getting strapped and heading to Lackland to check out a Super Hornet on my way back from Area 51.

That's the case here in NC. You can buy a long gun or handgun from an FFL or a private seller as long as you produce your NC Driver's License and either your unexpired CCW permit, or a one time Purchase Permit to the seller. No need to fill out the NICS form with each purchase. The idea is that as long as you are a NC resident, and have already passed one NICS check to get your CCW or Purchase Permit, you are good to go. Easy Peasy.
