Thoughts on keeping my loaded ar pistol in the truck

I've been seriously considering this lately. Because of today's climate I have finally installed a dash cam, and really thinking of keeping the ar in it. The coming elections are only going to make matters worse.

My handgun is always on me, but I was thinking the ar pistol would make one hell of a deterrent if I ever found myself surrounded by a mob. Usually I only travel with it unloaded if I am going out to shoot. Never wanted to run the risk of some leo being unfamiliar with the legalities.

Chances of me running into a mob of "protestors" is slim, but isn't it always better to be prepared?

Having a backup is always a good plan, but these days a long gun might be better.

You've already got a pistol. You can't really use 2 at once (despite what hollywood says), so the only reason to swap weapons at the truck is to upgrade.

Bonus of a long gun is that if you need to arm a passenger or friend you won’t have as many issues to deal with later if they don’t have a permit.

You can also go featureless and keep the detachable mag for a long gun, with an AR pistol you're stuck with a fixed mag no matter what, so I'm not sure an AR pistol would even *be* an upgrade from the one you CC.

I added "threatened" because that's the only time the thing would come out. And for the matter, what you propose is to brandish it in the hopes that it will achieve "what" exactly?
You plan is to exit the vehicle? Show your hardware and expect everyone to be like, OMG, let's be nice!?

Don't pigeon hole yourself by projecting expectations upon a hypothetical scenario. You will have NO control over how things unfold if you stop, if you escalate by interacting, by trying to address a threat in which you will most assuredly be severly outnumbered and in all probability, out firepowered as well.

Also, you WILL most certainly deal with LE possibly unfamiliar with the legalities of an AR Pistol "IN" a vehicle if stopped. Doesn't matter it's on your permit, whatever. You're asking for "luck" to be involved with a fairly innocuous interaction becoming pretty escalated quickly until things get resolved as to the AR Pistol (looks like one of those assault thingy's) being in the vehicle.

Anyways... If it comes out, it's for a purpose, and that purpose won't be to "scare" anyone, but to stop a threat and protect lives (mine or loved ones).

I believe you hit all points. Yes, I could store another pistol, but like you said that if the time ever came where it was necessary to pull the ar, that is for one purpose only.- to stop the threat, and the ar is much better suited in that scenario, which is why I'm contemplating it.

Edit to add - while I did say "deterrent" I'd like to clarify that while under any other circumstances, if I had to draw, it would be to defend my life. But in this case, yes I did actually mean act as a deterrent, and even scare. If trapped in an angry mob situation I'd take the menacing charge if it caused people to back up. If they didn't, we'd all be having a bad day.

Just my stupid opinion, but I would go for a mini-14, saiga, or some other featureless rifle. A lot less questions will come up if you have to use it.


A pump or a bbn pistol caliber lever isnt a terrible choice either.

Problem with the AR pistol unless you are exempt from the safe act it has to be a fixed mag. Not something really desirable in a truck gun. You are better off with a featureless semi auto rifle as a truck gun and a box full of magazines. It is not like you are going to be pulling the truck gun on the fly and shooting at zombies on the highway, That is what the pistol You are carrying is for. The truck Gun is for your copilot to use if you are moving or for you to hold off the hoards while the Calvary arrives to save you after Your rig has been disabled.

I was going to give my opinion but didn’t because most will say that I’m against everything. But being that many already gave it, I will echo them.

I think an AR pistol in a vehicle is not the best idea. If used, the legality will come into question. It wouldn’t be something I would want to try to defend against in addition to the defending of the use of force that would consume my time and money. The additional charge if charged for political reasons could be the difference of me getting out on bail or not and the jury of our so called peers could be influenced when it goes to trial.

Also, you are in a vehicle. It is much easier to maneuver a pistol in a vehicle. Your job is to exit the scene with that vehicle. If cornered and trapped in it, a pistol would be better.

Also, a fixed mag in the AR platform is a terrible weapon for defense. Even with one of those loaders that require fine motor skills that you will have to utilize under pressure. And if you get a miss feed, you are screwed.

Also, if you have a passenger that isn’t familiar with firearms to the level that you are, a point and shoot pistol will be more beneficial to them.

Also, contrary to what most say, a long gun is more of an offensive weapon. A weapon that is suitable past normal defensive engagements that shines past 25 yards. Yes it can be used to close like Kyle the 17 year old did but the longer barrel at that arms length distance could hinder you. If you are going to take a stand and fire on tangos at over 25 yards, you have lots of splaining to do. It’s best to just run and kill those that get close to you like Kyle the 17 year old did. All that can be done with a pistol.

I know it shouldn't be that way, but in NY where I live statements like that don't get you a second look vs "Well if I'm stuck in a mob of people." Beyond the polarization of peoples opinions vs something like an ar pistol with raises questions 1) about it being an ar period, 2) about it having a short barrel...


Marlin made a 16" .30-30 for awhile. I always thought would work nicely.

I have kicked around the idea of a trunk gun also. There could be some validity to having one, most likely not though. But if I was going to do it I would go with the Ruger PCC that uses the same magazines as your carry gun. That way you can also carry extra mags and ammo and it would be 100% interchangeable.

If those chassis that you can insert your carry pistol into make by CAA and RONI were legal here in NY, (their legality is debatable), that would be ideal since by themselves, they are just a piece of plastic and metal.

If those chassis that you can insert your carry pistol into make by CAA and RONI were legal here in NY, (their legality is debatable), that would be ideal since by themselves, they are just a piece of plastic and metal.

I'd still rather have a completely independent weapon.

You have more redundancy (imagine a malfunction with your primary that can't be quickly cleared).

And you can arm a second person if necessary.

I'm not sure what you gain by having something like the roni compared to another complete gun.

The odds of being in a confrontation, on the road, in which your handgun and any extra mags won't get you through are infinitesimal. An M4 would be the way to go anyway IMO.

The AR pistol with 11.5 inch barrel is what I am using as a truck gun. Legal to keep a loaded pistol in the vehicle, rifle not so much.

If an angry mob suddenly surrounds you, I doubt you will have any chance to exit your vehicle, unlock your trunk, retrieve your firearm, and use it to protect yourself. Firing a short barreled AR inside the cabin of your vehicle will most likely lead to some form of hearing loss.

Your vehicle as a weapon in itself, is the best weapon to use in such a scenario.

While yes I will say the gas pedal is probably the best option, but only when it is an option, it may not always be an option 100% of the time

If it ever comes to that you won't have to worry about it. In a life or death situation all of these gun laws are waived and the preservation of life kicks in. Do you really think a child at home would be charged for a gun when using dad's pistol to stop a burglary? Same thing. Hand off whatever guns you must in order to preserve life in an emergency situation. The law book goes out the window.

Oh, certainly you arm whomever with whatever.

But don't be so naive to think that they won’t bring charges later.

You have this attachment to the idea that the letter of the law matters more than the DA's politics. I would think there are more than enough recent examples to convince you otherwise.

Keep it up front with you. Don't worry so much about concealing it within the car. "To Have" in the law covers you when you "have" a pistol in your car. I'd try to wedge it between the seat and console with the muzzle end down. In this way it cannot be preceded as a threat. Guns not pointed at things cannot shoot said things.

You will want to take it with you when you exit the vehicle. Have a sling bag or similar. You are also covered carrying it this way in stores etc.

All in all a good idea and always nice to have extra options. In a life or death situation don't worry about the sound. You'll never hear it. I've had a friend tell me his partner blasted a 12ga Benelli with 3" magnums right next to his face to take out an attacking dog while he was down on the ground. He says he saw the barrel out of the corner of his eye but never heard the shot. No hearing damage.
