Correct. Don’t like the wage find a better job. Don’t like the starting pay interview elsewhere. Oh wait a railroad engineer with no degree or skill except driving a train can’t even make close to $100,000 anywhere else. I’m not saying it isn’t a skill to drive a train or it’s not a complicated job or that they shouldn’t be paid fairly but it’s a hefty salary for what they do. FRB is correct this cost will just be passed onto the consumer in our everyday goods and services and inflation will continue to rise. The feds will continue to raise interest rates and your homes will lose value. This is downward spiral and will now happen many times over and over.

I’m not interested in driving a train. I’d find it boring. I’m happy with my job and salary.

All I’m saying is there are more complicated job that require more skill, more risk, more education that do not pay nearly this salary. I get it happens and I’m ok with that. With my associates degree I made more than many with a masters degree, and in some cases it makes sense. Im not saying it made sense in my case or I’m that exception, but I worked hard to have the job I have.
All I’m saying is the only reason they did this is because they have the country by the balls right now and they knew they could. The wage demand and increase in this instance was unreasonable to me. Would I take it if I was them? I’d take it for sure, but I would have been happy with less. They will shoot themselves in the foot someday. They will be replaced with automation when it becomes cheaper and with 5% raises annually it’s likely not far off. In addition the RR companies can and will invest in better technology so that the trains can haul more cars and they will need fewer engineers down the road.
What people don’t understand is these things are truly not victories except for a very few people. You know who wins? The union because they will get more in dues and the few remaining engineers that will be left in 10 years. Just wait until this leads to the economy slowing, because it will, and 40% of the engineers get laid off. They will be crying then. By the time the economy turns around the train companies will have invested in better trains to pull more cars, in part because of this raise, and they will need less engineers and they will not all get hired back. Joe smoe engineer making $120,000-$140,000 will then have no job and have to sell his house because he will end up taking a lower paying job just to have a job.
People need to look at the big picture. I have seen this happen first hand a few times at my previous employer and the last time it was directly related to the union and employees fighting for unreasonable health insurance costs. 15-20 employees were replaced with robots that do pick and place because at the time they signed the contract demanding super cheap comprehensive health care the robot became cheaper. I was in management and I know for a fact the company looked at this same robot and declined it because it was too costly and cheaper to keep the employees. People can’t always see what is past the front of their faces and I fear this will be one of them.
Remember in the long run this gives the government more control because we will need UBI because there will be less and less jobs as wages and health care costs increase. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong and you have every right to disagree with me, but this is what I see happening.

Here are some details on the contract, not much but details the money part. 24% raise from 2020-2024 and $1,000 bonus each and every year. Not sure about you guys but I’m sure now one on here get 5% raises every year, year over year. Their back pay check will be $11,000.
I get lousy 2%’ers. Actually my contract is up in April or may and my last one was three years or so late. My back paycheck was only a couple thousand.

Well, we're pushing 10% inflation for a year now. Anything less than a 10% raise this year is a pay cut.

I agree with the 10% for the one year, but this is from 2020-2024. Many of those years had 1-2% inflation and I’m assuming soon with the recession/depression inflation will get back under control soon enough. They will rise rates .75%-1.0% this coming week from what I’m hearing. That’s huge. CC, cars, houses, loans will be slowing to a crawl. Mortgage interest rates are now over 6% and the market is crumbling.

The feds can only do so much. Yes they are adding money to the system but if people stop buying things the government can’t buy it all. It’s slowing and prices are dropping on many frivolous things. Next will be essentials. Many stores are offering sales, rebates, and coupons again.
It is hard to predict because energy is jumping up very quickly offsetting the reduction in items. Also food is a wild card because of the issues we’re having producing it and of course it takes energy to produce food.
I think consumer goods prices will drop because people just can’t afford the other items, but will the cost of essentials rise enough to offset the drop in non-essentials?? Time will tell. Also the labor market is something we have not seen in the past and the wages are insane, but if no one is buying those workers aren’t needed.

If you see $40k per year take home your employer is probably paying $150k-$200k total for your time.

Don't let the government get you mad at your employer for screwing you when they're the ones really giving it to you raw up the ass.
