I've always wanted to take a rifle class and I got my chance a few weeks ago with a low-light course put on by RPD. The course was designed for pistols, but it -did- say rifle or shotgun on the description, and I had more rifle ammo, so I messaged Dave and he okayed it. When it said low light, it meant no light, lol. Obviously had to bring a flashlight or weapon mounted light, and I borrowed a friend's Streamlight HL-X and the button pad for it. I take my Weds night conceal shoot class w/ them, so I am already used to their instructions and how the class will be run mainly, so that helped.
Long story short, I had a fucking blast. Learned a lot of illumination tactics w/ the weapon mounted light so I wasn't flagging my targets just to see who they were. Good tactics w/ the lights to ID targets in the dark, move to a spot, shoot, illuminate, move again, etc. We shot a lot of rounds, did a lot of drills, and for what was basically my first rifle class, I thought I did well and shot the fastest run during the only timed drill we ran. The Primary ACSS also worked great in this. I ended up turning down the brightness on it considerably, as it looks like the reticle bleeds in the dark. Still, it was very easy to use. Lastly, I learned a new shooting position, which came about because of the light pad on top of the rail. I curled my hand over the top of the rail, with my thumb on top. Always thought it would be uncomfortable, but it was not, especially while manipulating the light.
Now I just need to go out and get myself my own HL-X, lol. Hope Santa has deep pockets this year, I've spent a ton on shit already.
