No. There is no need to. If all it is is a pistol grip, then you can put that on a pistol like so without NFA stamps.

Or you can put this Thordsen on an AR pistol with a 7.5 inch barrel.

Why does it need to fit on an AR pistol?

As long as it's not a pistol grip like you stated and is just a stock, it should be 100% legal to use on a featureless rifle in NYS.

I'm saying that is a stock and not a pistol grip. If it were a pistol grip and not a stock, you would be able to use it on a AR pistol which you cannot because it's a stock.

A pistol grip is a stand-alone grip. That's a stock and sold as such. It's no different than the Thordsen.

If it were a pistol grip, you can put that on a pistol and legally be able to shoulder it because it isn't a stock. They can't have it both ways. It's either a stock or a grip.

That example shows that it is both though. It's not just a stock, but one with a pistol grip on it, or a pistol grip with a stock on it whichever way you'd like to phrase it.

Forget about NY. Say you live in the free state of Pennsylvania and are building an AR pistol. You have your stripped lower and parts and are now deciding to put a pistol grip on your pistol.

You pick that one that was pictured above. You think that'll fly and you didn't create an SBR? It's a stock.

That stock is heavily based off of the typical monte carlo stock to accommodate around a buffer tube. That's why it's noodle shaped and at an extreme angle. It's the same reason there are lever actions and short barreled shotguns that are legal in NY with those cutoff grip designs, because they're not pistol grips. The whole purpose and intent of that stock is that it's fixed and doesn't have any pistol grip, and it definitely doesn't look like one either.

Well, let me help you understand better then. The thordsen stock that you posted does not have a pistol grip, that's its whole purpose as already stated, that's why it looks the way it does, it's a monte carlo stock. some of these stocks are loosely termed semi-pistol grips because they have a nub or curve within the streamline of the stock. These "semi pistol grip" stocks aren't regulated like actual pistol grips are, and therefore not considered a feature. That's probably why you don't have a pistol grip and other features while you use that stock on one or more of your rifles in NYS. The reason people buy them for some modern sporting rifles is so they don't meet assault weapon criteria. It's also why the above "shotgun" posted in #44 has a cutoff stock that result in handhold grips that aren't pistol grips. I'm sure you still probably have no idea what I'm talking about though right? Can't see the resemblance still? The OP's stock is much more like an angled pistol grip connected to a stock, not yours.

I understand what you are saying. I just don't think it's correct. At the end of it all, it's a stock no matter what.

None of this is actually my opinion either, it's clear as day in regards to the definition of what these components are. All my long guns have pistol grips. All of my handguns have pistol grips, none of it is confusing for me nor subjective to my opinion. I feel like I'm just getting trolled really hard at this point.

I can see that if I use that logic for that particular stock although I do not agree with it because it's one solid piece. In a courtroom, I would argue that the one whole piece is a stock.

The OP's stock however is not a pistol grip because the stock is attached to the bottom just like the Thordsen which is considered legal. No pistol grip out there looks like that with a long piece attached to it that you can shoulder.

The one whole piece cannot be a pistol grip alone.

I cannot confirm whether or not the OP's stock is or isn't considered a pistol grip, but that fact that it looks like a normal protruding pistol grip with the underside molded into the stock makes it much more appealing both cosmetically and ergonomically. I've seen loads of bolt guns using a similar system chassis, but they can have whatever anyways, on a semi auto it remains uncertain.

I agree with @GUNSICK a new after market barrel is worth it! Even staying with a factory contour barrel, I replaced the barrel on a Ruger 77/22 with a Shilen factory contour barrel a can shoot 10 rd groups a dime can cover at 50 yards of a bench with CCI-SV ammo!
