Toronto city council urges ban on handgun sales after deadly mass shooting
Canadian public safety minister says federal government is considering the proposal
One day after a deadly mass shooting rocked the city of Toronto, Mayor John Tory wondered aloud why anyone in the area would need a gun. This week, the city council responded overwhelmingly: They don’t.

The council voted 41-4 on Tuesday to ask the provincial and federal governments to ban all sales of handguns and handgun ammunition in the city. The motion came just two days after a gunman opened fire in the city's Greektown neighbourhood, killing two people and injuring 13.


In a speech to the city council on Monday, Mr Tory said gun violence anywhere in Canada’s largest city was “horrible and completely unacceptable”.

"There are far too many people carrying around guns in our city and our region who should not have them," he said. "That leads to another question we need to discuss: Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?"




It was unclear what immediate effect the motion would have. Canadian public safety minister Ralph Goodale said the government was considering the proposal, but cautioned that such a change would require “substantial rewriting of the criminal code”.

I went through the three-day course [for a Firearm License] a few years ago. Generally, you have to reserve a spot in the course a few months in advance, as there are not very many courses running and they fill up quite quickly. When I took the course, it cost roughly a few hundred dollars. That fee does not include the fee to actually apply for your Firearms License, which is roughly another hundred something dollars.

After passing the course, which included both written and practical tests, I had to submit my application to the Chief Firearms Officer of Ontario. After he signs off, which for me took a month or so, my application moved over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), where they proceeded to do an in depth background check, interviewing my mom and dad, and asking about previous girlfriends, spouses, and sexual partners. When I renewed my license last year, my wife had to sign it, stating that she was aware I was renewing my firearms license.

From start to finish my application took well over six months. Though I am now able to purchase certain firearms, Canadian law makes it quite clear that I am not to defend myself with any of them.

But Mayor Tory and the Toronto City Council believe more gun control is needed.

Canada has its own “Social Democrats” party called the “New Democrat Party”. Their leader, Jameet Singh, has called on Canada's government to allow municipalities to ban handguns.

The anti-gun faction in Canada is using a divide-and-conquer approach by wanting the federal level government to allow cities to create bans as each city sees fit.

Will the “Democrat Socialists” in our country, like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez , do the same? Stay tuned.

Here' is the second paragraph from page 3 in Jameet Singh's recent letter to Trudeau :
“Second, your government must address the availability of guns in our cities by taking steps to immediately allow municipalities to ban handguns. Half of all firearms involved in gun crime originate from legal domestic sources. These guns are then stolen or sold illegally and end up on our streets. The federal government should not stand in the way of municipal leaders who know their communities best, and want to ban these weapons to keep their residents safe. “
