Lately, (last few weeks) I've been noticing people pulled over for traffic stops are outside of there car on a more frequent basis. On several occasions passing by I have seen officers rummaging through the vehicles while the occupants sit on the front bumper (at least once looked like they were cuffed). Does anyone know if there has been a change in how police are conducting traffic stops in general? Has anyone else noticed this lately? I drive about 60 miles on the highway round trip every day for the last 12 years and this is something I've been noticing only recently. Used to be the occupants stay in the vehicle, and it looks to me like vehicle searches are being conducted more frequently. Is it just me?

I walk almost daily either at home or on my lunch break at work. The number of liquor bottle and beer cans on the sides of the roads are staggering. There might be some kind of correlation there.

I spend 10 hours a day on the road and noticed that stops seemed to get fewer BUT now this week I've noticed a lot more stops. Some people are just begging for it, I've clocked cars at 113MPH with my collision avoidance radar and seen a lot of cars swerving and doing other stupid stuff. Personally I'm glad to the police cracking down.
I have noticed a bit of uptick in traffic stops on some of the more major roads by the Troopers, but out of the car stops, I have seen none.
The State needs a lot of revenue, tickets are going to start flowing from the State Police. Slow down.

I work with the guys at traffic court and a few of them are cops and they said that police aren’t pulling people over as much because they don’t want to get in contact and possible get infected for COVID. My assumption is when this pandemic is over especially in NY be prepared to get pulled over and ticketed, police and traffic court need to fill in all the revenue that was lost.
Sucks for upstate I guess because this (if true), couldn't be further from what's happening down here. We're not doing jack. They even had to hand-pick special details to enforce social distancing crap because the vast majority of cops were just playing the stupid recording as they drove by.

I said last night, no less than five times, how it felt like I was committing a crime by being at work and getting paid. I do not like this midnight thing, that is for sure.
It’s probably hard to start later in life but man I love midnights.
I only have two weeks to go. Each day I am counting down.

Who ever said they don’t have quotas? They don’t have a quota per se but they know the average number of tickets and they expect you to write that many so maybe they do have a quota.
I have not seen anyone pulled over in ions. My dads a part time copper and he was told not to pull anyone over unless it’s absolutely necessary.

The only reason for the traffic stops these days is to justify a search.
They actually brag about it.
They can't just search anyone they want, but they can search anyone going 1mph over.
There’s nothing about speeding that justifies a legal search, searches don’t happen due to speeding alone, and lastly, you know this.
Any search conducted using the justification “I observed the defendant traveling 1 mph over the speed limit” would be suppressed so fast a second speeding ticket would be issued.

Our local cops tend to be....ummmm.....kinda long in the tooth and quite chubby, they do as little as possible.

I can tell you that some local police dept in westchester are being told to have minimum contact . They also for a while had no protective gear. Thats not the case anymore.
On the other hand the highways are empty and people are driving faster. State police are probably trying to generate revenue. I always tend to drive slower on empty roads i set the cruise and relax. I haven’t seen a lot of cars pulled over on my travels.

You're right, 1mph over doesn't justify the search, it justifies the stop, without which the "justification" they find for the search wouldn't exist.
They cannot observe whatever suspicious behavior leads to the search without the stop, and they openly admit their purpose in stopping cars is to look for justification for the searches.

This is what i want from police i rather see you guys interacting with the community play games with kids , talk and bullshit with locals .
Until the time come when a crime is committed . Then you get paid to put yourself in harms way.
I dont want police patroling looking for reasons to ticket someone or find arrests for petty shit .

I think a lot of people wish cops were like firemen.
Sit around the station playing cards and eating chili until a call comes in.
I would add, that the dispatcher should first validate that there is at least suspicion that an actual crime is occurring before they even contact the officers.

Unfortunately they don’t have enough police on the road to do both anymore. My city’s PD has been dwindled down one guy at a time. They do the best they can with what they have. They try to hold outreach events with littler participation and the city has no money to give for this anymore.
Most cops are descent people not looking to give you or anyone else a hard time. Unfortunately they have been getting a lot of shit lately. Are they perfect hell no. Have I met bad cops hell yes. I had one who worked with my dad tell me she pulled me over for no seatbelt during seat belt week. I moved a crossed the street and 3 houses down and wore my seatbelt for the trip. I always have my seatbelt one. My seatbelt is grey and I had a grey sweatshirt on I explained this to her. She said nope you just put it on I saw you. I said the hell you did I had it on even after she knew who I was. If my dad didn’t work for her she’d surely have written me a ticket. I had a jet ski years ago and got a ticket for no spotter while jet skiing. I had a spotter they were faced forward not backwards. Wrote me a ticket. I fucked up so I took the ticket. Went to court to try to plea it down since it was an honest misunderstanding and the cop said there was no spotter at all one person driving and one person wake boarding. The cop lied. So yes there are shitty cops.
The first part I agree with, I've said it here many times. The amount of training we could conduct would be amazing. That's why firehouses with good bosses are full of firemen who are professional and know their jobs as good as brain surgeons.
The second part is impossible and places way too much liability on the dispatcher. I read 911 call transcripts daily as part of my job. Most of the time there is absolutely not way to determine the validity of a call based on what is said over 911. The answer is to punish those who make frivolous 911 calls. That's the only answer to the problem you are seeking to address.
