sup.. ok so I only been shooting for maybe 2 years and I became a gun addict like most of you I guess lol. I can shoot ok but I really want to get good and I know some are going to say practice which I know. I actually want some kind of training by someone who knows how to really shoot. Maybe a class or something. I kind of want to get into competition but definitely not good enough right now unless they have some kind of for run rookie comp. I would also like to join a club with a decent range that doesn’t charge a ridiculous amount of money and have open spots. I live in Orange County but wil travel maybe 45min to an hour for a club with a nice range. Thanks

I shoot great matches in obcats NJ. Dont let NJ bother you. It is all good. Follow the transport laws and all will be fine. They run great matches there. I have been shooting there for 5+ years.

He runs rifle, shotgun and pistol classes at Blue Mountain
in Cortland Manor which is about 45 minutes from you.

This is where you are wrong. You don't need to be "good enough" to get into competitions. We all start from scratch. Figure out which shooting discipline you want to get into. You can show up during scheduled local matches and observe or bring a gun and get your feet wet. People who run the matches are usually willing to help a newbie. You are not going to be embarrassed. Don't worry about it. There are also yearly clinics for new competitors.
People start by competing against themselves, beating your previous score can be very rewarding and fun.

besides @OnSight Firearms Training and MDTS that was mentioned, you also have @Stretz Tactical Inc. Stretz Tactical, and while I havent trained with him myself yet there is also @Nicys Firearm Instruction who is a member here and runs training classes.

@Mosinitis, I agree that marksmanship requires practice but it doesn't hurt

Proper support hand holster draw and return to the holster
drawing from concealment garments
engaging multiple targets
proper use of cover and concealment
working thru doorways and corners, room entry.
proper reloads (strong hand and support hand only)
close quarter engagements
alternate and unconventional shooting positions
shooting and moving
moving and shooting
shooting on the move
working with a partner
shooting under stress
shooting under time limitations
shooting from various distances with both strong and support hands
transitioning from rifle to pistol
search and scan / situational awareness
malfunction drills
seated positions
prone positions
protective shooting
ballistic effects on vehicles, walls, doorways, etc.
You know, all that "basic" stuff above. Not sure what "classes" are being referred to, but nothing listed above is 'basic".
Marksmanship is basic. You should know how to hit you target properly before you engage in any of the above activities.
It depends on what you want to do. Pretend to be someone you are not in a one-way match or develop an Internationally respected skill.
I have zero interest in "competition" or "gaming". I take and teach defensive based shooting. I feel no need to "compete" with anyone, other than someone trying to do harm to me or my family. That's what I train for, that's what my students come to me for. I have had two incidents that involved a firearm being used on my end for self defense and both times I "won". And by "won" I mean neither time did I have to pull the trigger. So that's a big win. BOOM! "Champion". LOL.
That's perfectly fine, but some of us prefer more than that. Marksmanship is a life-long pursuit. OP expressed interest in competing, your course is self-defense. Different strokes for different folks.

My point is you said "Classes teach you the basics". Which is true if you are referring to the "very first class you ever took". But classes are far from basic. Classes will teach you from very basic to very complex. Most "classes" some people shouldn't even be in until they learn the basics. That's why some classes have a "prerequisite". If a class has a 'prerequisite" it's not "basic".
Everything is fun. Competition, Training, self Defense work, Practice, Practical work, Target shooting. You will find fun in all of it, and find which direction you want to go. I tried competition over a decade ago and found people did things I would never do in self defense. Wasn't for me. Too much "gaming" and excuses.
Experiment for yourself and see what you like. Try everything.
I didn't say anything about practice. I mentioned developing marksmanship skill, which take a lot more than practice.
