Hey all! My wife has family in Maine. I have an unrestricted NYS handgun permit. Can I travel to Maine with an unloaded, locked up handgun out of NY and through Mass, New Hampshire, and into Maine? I read up on some things earlier on US Concealed Carry but I think I came away from that more confused. Thanks in advance.

You can but once you get into Maine you cannot CCW unless you get the non resident permit from Maine or a resident permit from these states.

mabey its like new hampshire you don't need a permit there but they still issue them.

Concealed carry permits are still issued for purposes of reciprocity with other states.

Also be sure to remember that even though it may be legal to carry there, different states have different rules, and carrying on private property against the wishes of the owner can land you straight in jail for illegal possession. Know what you are doing before you go. Good luck.

Oh and like mentioned the drive through Vt. removes any issues that could come up driving through Ma. and it is a much nicer drive in my opinion. This is unless you're driving in a snow/ice storm. Been there done that.
I like to stop at the Vermont country store just before you get to Rt91. It is pricey but they have some really nice deli sandwiches and salads and deserts. I like the eclairs, mmmmm.

You can carry in Maine without a permit.

If you are carrying without a permit, you have a duty to inform a police officer that you are carrying, immediately upon contact with that officer in a stop, detention, or arrest.
There are also some places that are restricted unless you have a permit.

Maine issues nonresident permits via mail. They're easy enough to get.

You won't have any problems in New Hampshire.

Massachusetts always scared the hell out of me when I drove through it with firearms. Even unloaded, locked up, and in the back of the vehicle. Massachusetts does whatever they want, FOPA be damned. Even though you are obeying federal law, you CAN still be arrested in Massachusetts. They simply don't care. Go through Vermont if you can. If you can't, go East into Springfield, then head North on I91 and get the hell out of the state as soon as you can.

no permit needed for ccw Concealed carry permits are still issued for purposes of reciprocity with other states., is the way I understand it same with New Hampshire.

Like others have said , bypass Mass and go through Vermont, to NH, and into Maine. I have done my research and do this every year for the bike rally in Laconia (we ride into Maine from Laconia). I have spoken to many LEO in my travels there through the years. NH is constitutional carry and Maine just requires you to notify LEO you are carrying if you do not hold a ccw permit. These states are not NY and have no intent on destroying your life for legally carrying a firearm. Totally different culture and state of mind there. ( Well, until enough Bostonians move into NH and start voting, it’s already begun.) There’s a gun shop right outside of Meredith NH that I stop at during bike week every year so I can savulate at all the shit I can’t have. And of course like any LGS we get talking about politics. The owner always hems and haws ever year about about all the liberals out of Boston buying up property upstate because they love it up there , then start voting to make it like the city ,(street lights, gun laws, complaining about the smell of cow shit,blah, blah, blah.) I tell him, “ Yeah I’m a little familiar with shit like that. , I’m from NY.” Immediately he’s thinking NYC and I tell him,” you know, there’s a whole state full of people outside NYC, and we have to put up with the same shit and we are a lot more alike than you think!!” He agrees , laughs and says, “the only difference is that it’s not too late for us”. According to us USCCA coverage map a person with a NY Resident permit can conceal carry in Maine, but the 2020 Traveler's Guide to Firearms Laws of The Fifty States does not show any reciprocity with the State Of New York.
The Maine Firearms CFP booklet states that "F. A handgun carried by a person to whom a valid permit to carry a concealed handgun has been issued by that person's state of residence if that person's state of residence honors a permit to carry a concealed handgun issued under this chapter; "

Since NY will not recognize a Maine Permit a NY Resident Permit holder would not a able to legally carry concealed in Maine.

It interesting that the USCCA and the Travelers Guide appear to give opposite answers!!!

Seriously though, everything posted on 2 Maine government sites, you are good to go....clear as day.
There is nothing about having to be a resident like some states require.

Oh, and retaining a lawyer for this question is absurd.
If still worried, call the Maine SP and talk to the highest level person you can and be sure to get their name......lieutenant or up preferably.
