My point exactly. Way too many things could go wrong between now and when the evacuations are supposed to be complete. To expect all parties involved to keep their heads and not get itchy trigger fingers is some really optimistic thinking.

That's the impression I get too. I don't know a bunch about the situation, but I've been following some of the former mil people I know on Facebook and it seems like the people commanding on the ground right now are just incompetent. Namely, I saw this pop up within the past few days which makes me think these people have no fucking clear picture of the mission at hand:
If they don't get their shit together, and someone starts taking serious charge of the situation, it's going to go downhill fast. This is what happens when leadership is being weak and political and the message about priorities is just not there.
To anyone that watched HBO's series "Veep" - it was hilarious but you also got the sense it somehow represented the reality of washington in which everyone involved was essentially incompetent and only cared about the daily spin. They also threw each under the bus on a moment's notice.
I get the sense what we have now is the veep crowd in charge during a time of real crisis, and it is not pretty.

The real danger and important story is the covid/Delta virus and how dangerous people who think the election was rigged and who aren't getting the jab are. That's the crisis. That's the threat. I can't believe what I just saw. Biden just gave another live talk but DID NOT talk about the Afghanistan mess at all! It was all about covid. He took some shots at republican governors/states that are not mandating mask use. And then he talked about requiring vaccine shots for anyone who works with medicare/medicaid or nursing home patients.
I guess his witless handlers decided if he changed the subject the Afghanistan mess would go away. This is incompetence on a galactic level. I'm beyond pissed off at this feckless asshole and the people who support him.

Statements and public press briefings made in the last twelve hours by Biden, Blinken, Austin, Miley and even Pelosi have to be very encouraging for the Talibon as they now see that the leadership of this nation is in the hands of people with no substance, fools that can't think on their feet and when they do, it is such a display of poor judgement, our adversaries all across the globe have to wonder if this shit is for real, our allies are speechless and left quaking. End of the day, this shitshow, deserved or not, is going to viewed as a failure of the left. The planning of this wasn't all under Biden, but the ability to react to it was -- and we saw that absolute failure of leadership take place in real time.
