OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the federal government is immediately placing a ban on 1,500 models and variants of certain assault-style weapons that have been used in mass shootings in Canada and abroad.

“Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country,” Trudeau said.

The prime minister described the sweeping regulations as “closing the market” on these weapons in Canada.

The RCMP has still not even identified the weapons used in the Nova Scotia shooting that directly prompted this, in fact, most of them were said to be illegally smuggled from the United States. How banning these guns makes Canadians safer is anyone's guess but doing this in response to a shooting where they haven't even disclosed what guns were used just goes to show how craven and opportunistic this is.

It's New Zealand-style gun confiscation. Trudeau says he can ban the possession of millions of guns in private hands on his say-so without so much as passing a law. Next he intends to ram this through the public and the legislature to get them to approve it without meaningful opposition.

If Canadians had any concern about their rights they would not stand for this, their parliament would repudiate it and Trudeau would be shown the door.

Don't think it couldn't happen here! We need to protect our liberties and our 2nd amendment. Both with our vote, and with our actions in exercising our rights.

Hopefully at that point SCOTUS will have to take it...but who knows what the court looks like then. If biden wins, a couple dems are refreshed within first two years such a case is a lost hope.

The fact that Trudeau and his administration has refused to disclose the type and number of weapons used speaks volumes. Had any type of "assault weapon" been used, it would be all over the news. Since there is no report, I can only presume that nothing he had falls into the scary and dangerous category.

This guy planned this thing extensively. You don't just go to Canadian Tire ( Canadian version of Wal-Mart ) and pick up a do-it-yourself RCMP cruiser kit, a RCMP uniform, several guns, ammunition, and a bunch of matches so you can go on a killing spree.

A portion of the order that scares me in particular is the ban on weapons that produce 10,000 joules of energy. 10,000 joules equates to about 7400 foot-pounds. That would include the .50 BMG, .416 Barrett, .460 Weatherby Mag, and other such cartridges. The scary part about it is the method they used to ban them. What I mean is, the anti's here in NY have been trying to ban the .50 BMG for a long time, but have been unable to come up with wording that bans the 50 without also including rifled shotguns. Trudeau just showed them how to do it.
