I believe Wray has 2 more years left in his term and he's said he isn't resigning. If that's true how can Patel become FBI director?
They serve at the will and want of the Current President. All can be replaced by a simple word of Commander in Chief.

The director of the FBI can be removed from office by the president of the United States. After removal and until a replacement is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the deputy director automatically acts in the role.

Trump needs to consider not only who will be best for the position he is trying to fill, but what will happen to the position he is pulling them from too.
Yes. Making an already slim majority in the house even slimmer with his appointments doesn't make any sense to me. That move alone could come back to haunt him.
