Tatriffs have to be paid up front,it will take months before they get thier money back, and when mexican goods cost 25%more. Guess what? Americans wont buy it.they wont paythe tarriff either. Mexico loses thier ass while we find or make other waus to obtain them cheaper.
Not to start a big argument on economics but: the goal of tariffs is to reduce the importation numbers. This occurs because the demand for the tariffed products decreases as the cost increases (basic supply/demand). So it creates a temporary burden to achieve an eventual desired effect. To say "tariffs are only paid by US consumers" is an over simplification of the economic results by those who in this case are ignorant of the economics or who oppose them for political reasons. (opposed to anything Trump does)US imports $59 billion (with a B) dollars of auto parts from Mexico every year. Guess where they go and what they're used for.
Honestly it annoys the crap out of me that so many here dont get how tariffs work, even just a little. Dont complain about us living in 1984 when it comes to a private company like Facebook censoring content when we have actual government officials who know better (or should- and if they don't, they're incompetent) telling you tariffs are paid by the country we are importing from- and you guys eat it up as truth.
That's not how it works and it's either incompetent or a bald faced lie for these folks to tell you otherwise.
I'm not sure GM has, much wiggle room left. Their half ton pick-ups are tagged at over 50g now. They lost any claim to patriotism when they took the bail out paid for by those who work in America .."The demand for Mexican garbage has been crippled".
You might take a look at the bottom of the seats in your car. You'd be surprised where they were made. And yes, you're right, tariffs are paid at the border- by the company importing the goods. Not by the exporter/seller.
I dont disagree with the macro analysis, @1911guy, I just think so many people are being hoodwinked here in plain daylight and it is practically shocking to see otherwise smart people buy the line they're being sold. If GM's cost to produce a vehicle goes up by 5-25% what do you think they'll do?
Raise the price of vehicles and/or make fewer vehicles? Or just eat the cost out of "patriotism"? Who loses if they make fewer vehicles (or if they can't sell as many so they have to make fewer)?
Some of us are willing to pay higher prices, even if it means tightening our own budgets, in order to be less dependent on other countries."The demand for Mexican garbage has been crippled".

Obviously, the supply/demand comes ultimately from the consumer. You are right as far as it goes. In the long run however we will be better off as an economy with the reduction in the hoards of illegal immigrants."The demand for Mexican garbage has been crippled".

Here is the big difference:Yes, that's the sales pitch. Country's have always had free trade and in this case It does bring down the cost, at the expense of your country men. It also does not pay a living wage and exploits foreigners. A false market is price fixing like the communists you like to trade with do . The communist system does not have a free market. they are making goods on the backs of slave labor. that's where your saving in costs come from .
The American corporations dodge taxes, exploit slave labor , Use unsafe and un regulated work environments sell at 1000% markup , put American dollars over seas, put American workers out of work . And you think its great because you think you saved a few cents ?
I voted for Trump because he wanted to put Americans first , That's exactly what he s doing . This guy is the best thing to happen to this country in a long time only your to blind to see it. I agree Trump is not presidential in anyway, bbut in the boardroom ,you will find no one better.
We did pretty god dam well before these globalists were allowed to ship our jobs over seas . And they don't give two fucks about our country. They are opportunists and exploiters with no loyalty to the people or country.
In order to compete with the Chinese we have to accept the living and working conditions of the Chinese. FUCK THAT. And fuck you if your willing to along with it.
Ok, I will live in that world. You can live in the make believe world where there is equal trade.only its not.equal trade requires lowering the living standard of americans to that of mexican and chineese workers.tarriffs wrre made to protect wokers and companys from unfair trade, like slave labor.
Ok, I will live in that world)
Nah, it'd be pretty shitty to live over there. I don't like their high taxes and such on imported goods. Not for me.Im good with that, just practice what you preach and go live over there. You'll see how god dammed free it is

You're not really selling me on it. I think I'll stick to keeping a distance. But I'll certainly buy their goods.Oh but Im sure you would love the living conditions and the police, and I hear the pay is wonderfull
Every day there is more depressing news about the U.S. economy. For example, it has just been announced that Harley-Davidson has decided to open a shiny new assembly plant in India. Meanwhile, formerly great American manufacturing cities such as Detroit have turned into rotting hellholes.
And let Americans live like they want to live. No tariffs involved.Let the Russians and Chinese and Mexicans live like they want to live.
Simple solution Militarization of our borders it seems to work in other places you want entrance to our soil try knocking at front door
So now the enemy of American industry (where you want all those manufacturing jobs to magically appear) is... American industry?
.
We're going to spend some $31 billion dollars on farm subsidies because of these tariffs which we otherwise would not have had to spend. Or, I suppose, we could not spend the subsidies, those farms go out of business, and Americans either eat imported apples for 8 bucks a pop or dont eat apples at all.
Make Anerica Hungry Again isn't a terribly good slogan.
That's not totally true, the floods and tornados out west have devastated crops and livestock , The trade war didn't help them any either .
