So, we've all seen that story in the MSM about how the gun industry churns fears about gun control to gin up sales and how in consequence nothing is better for the gun industry than Democrats in office.
It might seem like a strange argument to make as the gun control party that you are helping put more guns in American hands, but this gets trotted out often enough, here's an example from earlier in the year I found on NPR:
I think most of us here know that nobody stopped buying guns, but on the other hand I think this narrative gets more credit than it deserves.
The real numbers:
NICS Firearm Checks: Month/Year
There is one story here: NICS checks have steadily gone up every year since 2002, under GWB and Obama, except that there was a massive and very real jump of over 4 million checks in 2016. What followed in Trump's first year of office in 2017 was not a Trump slump, it was a correction from the election mania year to "only" 25.2 million checks, more than 2 million greater than 2015 and continuing the course of increased gun sales every year. 2018 is on track to match last year.
If the gun market has reached "saturation" the NICS checks numbers show no sign of it. It seems that more people are still buying more guns.
