Trump Taps Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt As EPA Head

Pruitt has been a very outspoken critic of President Obama's EPA, has sued the agency on mulitple occassions and has also questioned "the degree and extent of global warming and its connection to the actions of mankind," having called the "debate … far from settled."

According to the Environmental Defense Fund, Pruitt previously boasted that he “led the charge with repeated notices and subsequent lawsuits against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their [sic] leadership’s activist agenda." Moreover, per Reuters, Pruitt led the charge for Oklahoma in restoring environmental regulatory oversight to the states and away for the agency he's slated to run.

President-elect Trump’s nomination of Scott Pruitt, a climate-change denier and bedfellow of polluter lobbyists, to head the Environmental Protection Agency is an attack on the right of all Americans to safe, breathable air and drinkable clean water.

Mr. Trump must retract this announcement or the Senate should reject the nomination. Tell your senator to reject this nomination and demand a nominee who will protect all Americans’ right to a safe and healthy environment.

Pruitt boasts about leading the charge against pollution limits on toxic substances like soot and mercury that put us all at risk for increased cancer, childhood asthma and other health problems. He falsely claims that fracking doesn’t contaminate drinking water supplies.

The EPA is responsible for dictating national air quality standards and regulating discharges of pollutants into water bodies to protect people and the environment. The more stringent the standards, the cleaner the air we breathe and the water we drink.

Instead, Pruitt has been part of a secretive, coordinated national corporate campaign to undo the federal pollution protections that are supposed to keep our air and water clean. In exchange, he has received nearly $315,000 from the fossil fuel industry since 2002.

We deserve better than this.

Americans were divided on many issues in last month’s election, but no one voted for toxic air; no one voted for toxic water.

The head of the EPA should be working to ensure that our air is clean to breathe and our water is safe to drink, not to ensure that polluters make more money.

Urge your senator to protect the health of our communities by rejecting Scott Pruitt’s nomination.
