This led me to this 1994 Charlie Rose interview of Sir James Goldsmith who opposed and absolutely nails the consequences of NAFTA and especially GATT 1994. GATT 1994 was a huge mistake approved and implemented in 1995. GATT is the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade international treaty implemented in 1947. Every so often they conduct negotiations called "Rounds". 1994 Round is known as the Uruguay Round. It was supposed to be a measured negotiation amongst countries to reduce or remove various trade barriers as most were, but it went much farther than that. It opened the floodgates not only in terms of trade restrictions but also foreign investments and intellectual property, etc., in which we have gotten the short end of the stick. It also marked the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was supported widely by Liberals and Neocons of the day, including Newt Gingrich and the "Contracton with America" crowd and Bill Clinton. It should be obvious by now that when they team up, it usually means we are getting screwed. It is really worth watching.
Again, implemented in 1995. Ironic that those who scream loudest about taxing today's mega-wealthy are oblivious to the notion that they were by-and-large, the supporters of the policies that created that class.
