Donald Trump’s presidential victory preserves the Supreme Court’s narrow conservative majority by clearing the way for the new president to choose a jurist next year to fill the seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

And with Republicans maintaining control of the Senate, Trump will have a free hand in selecting someone with strong conservative credentials, confident his nominee will be confirmed.

The future of the Supreme Court’s ideological balance proved to be a critical factor for many Republican voters. In exit polls, about 1 in 5 voters said the Supreme Court appointments were “the most important factor” in their decision, and those voters favored Trump by a 57% to 40% margin, according to ABC News.

Scalia's appointment.
Ginsberg is 83 years old. She can't even stay awake for a State of the Union address. I can't picture her being around for more than a year or two.
Kennedy is 80 years old.
Breyer is 78 years old. Since he is so liberal, I could see him trying to stick it out for another 4 years hoping that a Democrat president would be able to nominate someone to fill his vacancy.

Whoever Trump appoints, they should be young. Kagan is 56 and Sotomayor is 62. They have another ~20 years. We need some conservatives that will be around for a while.

Here's president-elect Donald Trump's list of potential Supreme Court nominees

President-elect Donald Trump will likely have a huge role in shaping the composition of the Supreme Court for the next few decades.

After Senate Republicans refused to hold a hearing for Merrick Garland — President Obama's choice to replace conservative Justice Antonin Scalia — Trump will likely have the opportunity to fill at least one seat on the country's highest court.

Two liberal justices on the court, 78-year-old Stephen Breyer and 83-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg are also expected to retire soon.

Trump has expressed support for highly-conservative justices in the past. He's said he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case giving women the right to abortions, and said that the Court needs to "uphold the Second Amendment."

Trump's list of nominees contains some unusual choices, such as Utah Sen. Mike Lee. A spokesman for Lee told Politico that "Sen. Lee already has the job he wants which is why he is campaigning to represent the great people of Utah again this year."

For the most part, all of Trump's potential nominees have a history of supporting conservative issues.

Trump’s Supreme Court Candidates

On issuing this supplement, Trump said that the combined list “is definitive and I will choose only from it in picking future justices of the United States Supreme Court.”

For what it’s worth, the list includes plenty of folks of whom I think very highly and others I’m not familiar with. There are also some folks not on the list who would be high on my own list.​

I don't wish bad things on R B-G but let's be serious, she's not neutral and she's senile as hell. She needs to go.
I like that the jurists on Trump's list are mostly unknown to me. That tells me they do their job without fanfair. Reading their credentials is very reassuring.
I don't have a preference but it's doubtful to me that Cruz will be on any Trump short list at this point. Maybe if he has the opportunity to choose 3 replacements Cruz's name may raise to the top.
Reid had always threatened the nuclear option for justices. McConnell should reach into that bag of tricks if necessary.

Cruz would be an awesome addition to the court in the very mold of Scalia. He's young, has real experience with the court already, and most importantly is a constitutionalist. Trump also eliminates a potential reelection primary challenger by getting him appointed to the court.

Edit: It would also show (pretty dramatically) that Trump has moved 'beyond the election' in terms of what is good for the country to pick someone who was a competitor.

I'm having a hard time putting this into words, so sorry if it comes out jumbled or mixed up.

I obviously have no issues holding up the 2nd amendment, but overturning Roe v Wade or discriminatory towards other races/sexual orientation/religions/bathroom/etc isn't high on my list. I know I probably don't share views that all of you do, but if it doesn't bother me, I don't care. Keep RvW, it shouldn't be a form of birth control, but victims of rape shouldn't have to carry. Women whose life is threatened by the baby, or who may pass on a disease they didn't know they had isn't fair either. I don't care where you shit, so don't ban it. Being Muslim isn't a crime, just like being a part of the KKK isn't a crime either, it's your actions. Being gay is a just another way of life. It isn't mine, but some people are gay. Happens. We can't hold that against them. We can get into the logistics of personal preference and owning a business later, but gay marriage shouldn't have been as hard as it was to obtain. Healthcare is a joke as well, it shouldn't be a privilege to have it, and a fine to not have it.

Hope that all makes sense, sorry if you don't agree, I know we can't agree on everything. Having SC Justices who are for the Constitution is a good start. I only wish it could make SAFE illegal and it would just adopt a federal standard instead of every state being different.

i think most agree with your positions. the media did a good job of making people think that the world is going to end of your gay, muslim, brown, female, etc... thats simple not going to be the case, and never was.


i believe in a womans right to choose, but it can't be used as birth control. in cases of rape, or birth defects, disease, etc... i can see a reason for it.

as for gay people, its not how we are created physiologically, we are designed to mate with the opposite sex for the purpose of procreation, BUT..... whatever floats your boat, and what you do behind closed doors is not my business. i DO NOT AGREE with the public bathroom crap, i don't want to see transgender bathrooms in schools, i don't want my kids or future grandkids being subjected to someone of the opposite sex sharing a bathroom with them.

Oh, and education. We all know the story of how it used to be so cheap and shit, and now it's not. I had no idea how much it used to be contributed to by states, and how much it isn't now. College shouldn't be a for-profit institution. After going through a few years of school, I finally finished and got my degree. Also saddled with a nice bill, but thankfully lower than most people. Still, any education I do now comes from me and me only. If I'm paying it off for as long as some people are (not defending snowflakes who got a coffee stirring degree), there's something wrong with that. Not saying I need Harvard, but public/state/SUNY type schools should be a lot cheaper.
