Two Virginia residents arrested for illegally possessing loaded handguns

Staten Island, New York - On December 10, 2019 at approximately 11:40 a.m., a Trooper from SP Staten Island arrested Anna M. Nevarez, age 46, of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Ashawnti K. Jones, age 28, of Portsmouth, Virginia, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree - a class C felony.

The Trooper was patrolling the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and conducted a traffic stop on a black 2009 Audi A6, operated by Nevarez, for a violation of the vehicle and traffic law. During the investigation of incident, one loaded handgun was located in the trunk of the vehicle, and another was found in Jones' possession. It was discovered that both individuals had previous felony convictions and were unauthorized to possess the handguns.

That's what I want to know. What prompted the search? Being a convicted felon doesn't mean you get your rights violated after you're released. Maybe they can be searched if they're on probation? Of course the shitty article won't present all the facts that led to the traffic stop

The one and only time I've ever had with LE, a local trooper used to harass me about stupid shit all the time. He was a town drunk. One day I just fueled up my little Sunbird and seen him drive by so I parked at the gas station hoping he would leave. I had side pipes on it that would really speak when I got into it. He wasn't leaving and I had no more time to wait. I pulled out of the station just as gently as I could so it wouldn't get loud, sure as shit he pulls me over. The typical do you know why I pulled you over? Nope. Your exhaust is loud! Then tells me I need to step out of the car so he could search for drugs because he smelled pot. I didnt smoke at the time and no one ever smoked it in my car. He proceeded to gut my car looking for something that wasn't there. Anything that could be easily removed was and put on the side of the road! Including the rear seats! I was beyond fuckin pissed! He tells me I'm luck he didnt find anything.
From that day on I made sure to be the biggest asshole towards him and just as disrespectful as I could.
I knew all the other troopers in the area and they all said he was an asshole

They should be tracked every time they use the "I smell pot" thing.

If they don't find actual pot more than 50% of the time, then they aren't capable of identifying the smell well enough for it to be "probable cause" anymore.

And that is find pot, not say "I smell pot" and find coke, or guns, or anything that isn't pot.

Of course, the best solution is to get rid of the pot law to begin with. I wonder what their unjustified search excuse will be once that happens ?

In the future, those with misdemeanors won’t be able to own guns. You guys know it isn’t a stretch. I’d be the perp because I’d carry anyway. And when I’m arrested, NY Gun Forum will give no perp love to me.

True story. I wouldn’t of been able to own handguns in NYC because of my 2 misdemeanors in my youth. So if I would have ignored them, I’d be a perp. Good thing I crossed an arbitrary line where I could own them.

I won't pretend to know how the whole stop took place but they both probably were acting pretty sketchy. Would their felonies had come up when the plate was initially ran before the officer even exited his car? Every time a convicted felon gets caught with firearms it is reflected on the gun community as a whole. We see that every day and it gets used against us. I can see some getting their rights back after they serve their due time, but the rest, fuck them.

I believe what some here are talking about is the reason the cops searched.
The fact is, there are many thousands of cases of cops overstepping their right to search because of suspicion.....being suspicious isnt a reason to search.
Just driving a car you must identify yourself but driving doesnt mean cops can just search.
Is there more to this story? Of course there is but we dont know what by reading what is posted.
Did they smell weed? Was the driver on probation or parole? Did cops see first gun?......we dont know.
But if the cops searched because the occupants were "in a suspicious area" or were acting "suspicious", their rights may have been violated.
These points should be important to a cop.
Just because you have priors doesnt mean the 4th amendment doesnt apply to you.

Doing a "protective sweep".

These cops conduct a protective sweep for a prolonged time, even putting a dog in the attic.....hardly a protective sweep as defined by law.
These cops didnt see any bad guys so how was their "safety" in jeaprody?
They were just hanging around laughing and milling around. There was no heightened level of danger.
These arrogant cops just KNOW that they are clear of any wrongdoing.
However, ALOT of viewers are demanding answers and the department says they are investigating.
