Ulster County pistol permit question?

Hey all, so i was born and raised on Staten Island, NYC, and still own a home there. I also own a home in New Jersey, which for my purpose of firearms license i use as my primary residence, so i have a NJ firearms license. I also own over 25 acres of extremely rural property upstate in Ulster County Catskills.

I love going up there and target shooting, but legally i can only bring my rifles and shotguns, and YES i know made legal by conforming them to the Safe act. Obviously, though i cant bring my handguns up to my property and target shoot.

This brings me to my question, being that i own the property up in Ulster county and there is a residence of a small cabin on my land, can i use this address/property to get a pistol permit strictly for use on my land and leave the pistols locked up in my cabin up there? My whole purpose is i would like to be able to target shoot with handguns up there, not just rifles and shotguns.

Now, i understand, if i am correct, that i can use my property as an out of state residence, and i do go up there a lot and stay up there for long periods during the year. Then i can apply for a pistol permit using that address. My issue is i do NOT know anyone up there, lol. I dont even really have neighbors, except for one tons of acres away, as my property is surrounded on 3 sides by state land. I go up there and hang, and stay, and chill, but dont have people that i would be able to use for references in Ulster county, nobody knows i am there, lol. However, i DO have MANY NY references in Richmond county, Staten Island.

I guess to sum it up, my final questions would be, can i use my cabin and property address in Ulster co to get an out of state pistol permit, remember i own a house in Jersey too which i have a legal pistol and firearms license and mostly use as my "primary" residence, AND i have a house in NYC staten island too, as another NY address, plus the upstate property. What would be my best options? Can i use references from NY, but not in Ulster co NY, or they HAVE to be Ulster residents, of which i have nobody? Lastly, i could always get a NYC firearms license thru my Staten Island address, but that would probably NOT help in any way, and be much harder and restrictive.

What options do i have, or what would you guys do in my position? And please dont say to sell the land and buy the equivalent in Pa, because THAT is my eventual goal, but not now, lol. Sorry if this was a bit confusing, as i do own a lot of homes and property in NYC, NYS, and NJ, so PM me if ya want more details. Thanks in advance for any help or direction.

I am not sure about the cabin and residence, but your references DO NOT need to be from Ulster. They do not even need to be from NY and you can use relatives as well. Hope this helps and you get your answers for the other questions. You might try the Ulster County Sheriff's Pistol division for answers. They are actually pretty helpful there and seem to want to help people obtain their permit.

Thank you Budonahog, that was VERY helpful actually. Next time i go up to my property i will talk to the Sheriffs pistol division, for sure. Thats good news about me not needing Ulster Co residence as references. I thought i read here that you did need Co only residents as references, and like 4, and they had to be non family.

It varies county to county, in fact, the whole process varies county to county.

In my county, as a land owner you could be eligible, but you might not be in another county.

Do you mind me asking, what county you are in? Its not Ulster, by chance is it?

There really isn't much difference in NY.

The only way to buy/posses/own a pistol (legally) is with a pistol license. You cannot even have one strictly at your house on own property without one.

Even more confusing is the process varies widely from county to county. Some are very easy, some and very challenging or prohibitive.

Ny only issues a "pistol license" some are "unrestricted" while others are for "premesis" or "sportsman" and as said before the process varies wildly from one county to the next.
