Until now. Now they want you to buy the gun, take the receipt the dealer gives you to the clerk, and then WAIT. For days/ months until a judge signs off and sends you a coupon, then take the coupon to the gun store to pick it up.

That is how it used to be in Broome County. Now they do it on the spot. Hope they do not change back to the way it was.

I'm a little confused on what goes on at the permit office in Ulster County. What exactly changed? Here in Broome County the process goes like this: Go to a dealer and buy the gun. Dealer will then give you a receipt of the gun to add to your permit. Take that piece of paper to the permit office. Pay $3 and they add it to your permit while you wait. When done, they give you a "coupon" and you then go back to your dealer and give him the coupon. Fill out background check and then they give you your gun when you pass. Is this what Ulster County does?

This is what the way it has always been done. This thread is the first I am hearing that is no longer the situation.

How does a preapproved coupon work? In Rensselaer county all of the pistol info and permit info is on the coupon.

The last handgun I bough I had on my permit and in the car in 40 minutes. If the damn PP office was closer it would have been quicker!

I added a gun to my permit in ulster 3 weeks ago. No wait, went to permit office, paid, added, went and picked up gun, same day. Years ago Ulster use to send every purchase to the judge before you could pick up your gun. It took anywhere from 4 weeks to as much as 6 months at times. They also had a 4 gun limit under Judge Bradley. The only exception was if you were a licensed collector. No, I cant tell you what a licensed collector was.

The long standing practice of the Ulster County Sheriff's Pistol Bureau of directly issuing pick up coupons to valid pistol permit holders who have purchased handguns has been canceled, effective immediately. This is at the direction of the Administrative Judge for the Third Judicial Circuit. The practice was authorized by written delegation from an Ulster County licensing officer. Henceforth, all amendments related to pistol permits will be forwarded to a licensing officer for review.
