University Shootings Will Only Get Worse. Here Is a Solution
A proposal that universities should seriously consider is to offer free or highly subsidized tuition to law enforcement personnel who are committed to advancing their education while carrying lethal force sufficient to neutralize any threat that may arise. This proposal promises myriad benefits at little or no real cost.

First, this proposal reduces the likelihood of a bloodbath that would almost certainly have occurred at UNCC because we cannot expect every classroom to have a Riley Howell present. What is more, we should not be asking college students to defend their classmates against the ongoing threat of lethal force. This is a job for professionals who are trained to identify the threat well in advance of it becoming an "active shooter" situation.

Holy shit, DemocRATs will not be happy with this solution. Although its a great idea, and makes sense, there is no way DemocRATs will allow kids to be safer on campus. We can not have our children be protected while on campus. democRATs think schools should be free fire zones.

In a more rational world, people would undertake an exercise called "Root Cause Analysis", and constructively apply the results. It has been conclusively proven that the concept of "gun free zones" (pushed by Joe "Two Blasts" Biden, 1990) is an utter failure. While this solution partially addresses the issue, by interjecting some uncertainty into the bad guys equation, it doesn't go far enough, as it simply would make any reasonably fit mid thirties guy the first target of any nutjob willing to perform mass murder, especially those that looked slightly squared away. A complete re-institution of the 2A would almost certainly diminish the threat, as when the bad guy can't know which one of the 20-ish co-eds is the one packing, it might be a better deterrent. Put another way, right now the odds are in the bad guys favor, as virtually nobody will be able to stop them. Up the deterrent odds to 30 or 40%, and now the bad guys will definitely rethink their actions.

Haven't the courts ruled (most recently in the parkland case) that police officers have no duty to protect people? If so, then what good will this do? If an on duty cop has no obligation to protect citizens, then why does anyone think an off duty cop attending class will do so?

Remove the gun free zone restrictions and let citizens carry guns. Proclaim the university is no longer a gun free zone and my guess is the campus environment will be safer.

Most cops aren't douchebags and would defend the children even though they aren't legally required to. Much like armed teachers.

You are of course right that if adding a few good guys with guns (off duty cops) helps, adding more (normal citizens) is better.

Funny how we never had the school shooting problem before they made them gun free zones.

Such a novel and forbidden idea.
Students allowed the means to defend themselves would solve the issue but stopping the college campus shootings isn't actually the goal.
The agenda is the priority and helpless students are the cost of that agenda.

Simpler, cheaper, and better idea: just let everyone carry on campus.
Under federal law uni's could already do this for 21+, and under-21 kids could keep long guns in their residences and cars if this was allowed.
