Edited to reflect my singular focus on a decent Mosin

Evening, folks!

I’ve always been into military history, and now that I’ve got my current builds/needs squared away, I’d like to scoop up my NEXT surplus rifle. Some models I’m into:
Mosin

I’m not necessarily looking for rarity/collectors items; I’m really focused on good shooters, ideally at sub-gunbroker madness. Just putting the feelers out there...what do you folks have laying around?

Not selling any, but consider an SKS or Mosin Nagant. They will be a fraction of the price of a Garand or M1 carbine, and the ammunition will be 50% of the cost.

Frankly, it’s my favorite, too. The history, the lines, the round it shoots...I just dig it. I do eventually plan on having the entire list at some point, but this is my first foray.

All pretty good choices.
Garands are awesome but are expensive. However the prices don't seem to have gone nearly as crazy as other guns during the current shitshow. Fun and practical and compliant in NY. Prices should be 1200+ at this time.
M1 Carbine is also good. A little underpowered but detachable magazine is a awesome feature for older milsurps. Also an incredibly lightweight rifle for the time, just over 5 lbs.. Prices are high for the actual surplus M1 Carbines, 1100+. If you don't need it to be actual surplus there are many decent after market ones to be had for 6-800. Just research these as some were crap.
SKS is an extremely well made rifle and even as the prices on them have gone up there is a lot of bang for the buck with the SKS. Strangely if you order one the wear and tear can vary widely. Simple system, Lots of fun, &.62x39 much cheaper than M2 Ball.
Mosins are OK but I think that there are many better choices for bolt action milsurps. It's a very rudimentary rifle, The safety system is dumb, triggers aren't very good. They do work and are fun to shoot, but the prices for them had gotten stupid even pre-covid, I got on board a little late in the pricing but now at 400+ I think you could do better.
Rifles that you didn't mention that might be worth consideration.
Mauser rifles are a great choice. The Mauser action is the most copied action for a reason. Actual German K98s are going to be high priced but there are many other countries that licensed the design that are less collectable but work just as good. Spanish or Yugo Mausers have been being imported recently and would run 450+ depending on condition. Ammo can be a little hard to come by.
Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1 is a good one. I believe it was the longest rifle in service with the Canadian rangers just recently adopting something new. Cock on close action is really smooth and if you can find one with the original vernier sights you will have one of the best iron sights made. 10 round magazine is double the capacity of most milsurps of the WW2 era. Ammo can be tricky to find. Prices 450+ Also look at Ishapore 2a/2a1 based on the SMLE No1 Mk3 but chambered in .308/7.62x51 and apparently the heat treating is much better than the original Enfields.
Swiss Schmidt-Rubin and K31. Don't know a lot about them but all the research and reviews are very favorable. Swiss craftsmanship.
Also are Japanese Arisaka, French MAS36, US Springfield 1903/A3, all of which are excellent choices Never heard much good about Italian Carcano rifles.
This is just pretty much WW2. You have opened a can of worms as well as your wallet getting started in Milsurp collecting my friend! Hope this helps, let us know what you get first! Good Luck!

If you can find a Garand for a decent price, I cannot recommend it enough. I was able to buy a decent amount of ammo for a fair price from another poster here and shot a bunch of it today, it was great! Now however is the tough part, because some people want $3+ a round.

That’s what I’m hearing, though I have gotten mixed messages. Some folks are saying they’ve all dried up, others are saying exactly what you are; that it’s really the only way to come into a Garand at a reasonable cost. The wait kills me, haha.

I know. There’s just this modern day phobia of snail mail/personal information floating around in the ether. Plus, the whole 4-6 month waitlist thing really throws a wrench in my impulsivity.

Regardless, I just joined the Garand collectors association...might as well get the ball rolling.

I have all of them plus others. Nothing beats American firepower. Get what you can afford and afford to shoot right now. Mosin is probably the cheapest ammo when you can find it.

I actually would stay away from Ishapores or the SMLE unless you are ready to do some possible woodworking and fixing of a surplus rifle. The fitting required for the SMLE and its derivatives are definitely not beginner friendly, especially for someone just looking for a shooter. Also, the heat treating is no better nor is the steel any better--I've heard otherwise but a former proofmaster at Rifle Factory Ishapore confirmed that the steel is no better than SMLEs.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I’m really looking for shooters in the models that I’ve listed. I’m honestly not too familiar with the history of that particular rifle, but I’ll do some research.

That said, I’m mostly looking for a Mosin and/or an SKS. I figure I’ll just get on the CMP waitlist and see what happens, as far as the Garand goes.

Picked up an SKS that I’ve had to do some work to, and I LOVE it.

Oof, well I’ll gladly trade ya some dollar bills!

My guitar collection is actually mostly basses, as I’m primarily a bass player.
As for six strings, there’s not really a ton of room to get rid of stuff; in fact, I’d like to pick some more up! right now, I’m at one tele, one Les Paul, one Martin acoustic.
Basses are where it gets fun, but even there, everything I own serves a purpose...one P bass with rounds, one with flats, one with five strings, one J, one active five string, one active four string, one fretless, etc.

i just have a acoustic guitar .. not Shure what pedal's Miku uses .. another girl in the band uses Morley pedals .. she has a pedal board with like 9 pedals on it ..

The guitars would be for my wife, I just look for them. Just got her a Taylor Mini G from a guitar guy, now working on getting some TC contender stuff for me from him. Would kind of like to get her a quality acoustic bass, but smaller than the full size upright, ha ha. Bought her a real nice 62-63 Hagstrom Bass from the original owner some years back as well as a nice Gibson B12N that was purchased new by him in the late 60's/early 70's. My sister has one more of his guitars I'm waiting on, a Chet Atkins Country Gentleman that he bought new with the original case and reciept, that one might require selling some iron for. So yes interested in trading guns for guitars, something special but not obscure.
