Upgrades to the club

My club is into year 2 of a range upgrade program. Started laying the new berm last night. Basically in addition to the 40' berm at 100 yards there will be a new 11' wide x 11' tall berm at the 25 yard for pistol. Last night the first 100 of 1000 tires were set out and rammed with sand. These are the big 18 wheeler size tires. The firing line you see will be torn down next year, the new one is about 30 yards back. Once all compacted they're going to bury it in dirt.

Did you guys design it yourself, or is it a design you got somewhere else?

We built the cover last year farther back than the berm you just saw. Roof is on now, we have a place to hide when it rains during construction. Berms and backup berms. Looks like an Amish public works project. A number of handymen, contractors, farmers, engineers in the club. No shortage of talent, tools or elbow grease. On the left you can see the old range cover. It'll be coming down once the new facilities are operational.

Did you guys design it yourself, or is it a design you got somewhere else?

The primary design crew is from the club. One guy is an old fashioned civil engineer. Another guy is a former Army range officer. They spent about 3 years researching and designing, redesigning, redesigning. Last summer they put the shovel into the dirt. One member owns a trucking company, somehow he found 1000 tires for us plus we get our sand at cost by the 20 ton load (zero trucking cost since he lives down the road.) You have to work 10 work party hours per year to maintain club membership. Lots of guys put in 20 hours per year on projects like this. Some of us drive desks and love working on these projects.
