At the October 10, 2017 Town Board Meeting Councilwoman Witherell asked the Town Board to
consider an ordinance providing for the regulation of small farm operations in the Town of Fort Ann to
protect animals and co-owners of property. She realizes that people aren’t going to be happy about this
because Fort Ann is a farming community. She has already been contacted by Larry Bailey that he is
very upset about this. Mr. Bailey asked Councilwoman Witherell if this came about because of one
person specifically her neighbor. Councilwoman Witherell responded yes but she would be doing this
regardless of whether it was a neighbor or not because she has found no laws governing for farms on
how to treat animals or treat your neighbors. Unless you own 200 or more head of cattle there’s no
regulations. Councilwoman Witherell stated she has done a lot of research on this topic. A motion was
introduced by Councilman Varney, seconded by Councilwoman Stark to hold a public hearing December
11, 2017 at 6:05 p.m. at the Fort Ann Fire house.
Motion was carried with Councilman Fletcher voting no and Supervisor Moore being absent

." It sought to restrict livestock to properties larger than one acre. It would have created burdensome requirements for providing "adequate shelter" and corral space for livestock. It would have required "no less than daily" cleaning of all barns and shelters."
I dont know what is going on in Fort Ann but around here, there are already laws that cover these issues.
If there is an epidemic of unsafe, unethical and unsanitary farming practices going on in Fort Ann, there are other avenues to take other than making new "custom" laws.
In my experience the smaller the farm, the safer, cleaner and more ethical they are. Those are the reasons most small scale farms are based on.

Using political power for personal use is the norm in New Yorkistan. Seems like every day there is another story just like this one somewhere in this hell hole of a state. We need a wall between the real New York and NYC - that would solve most of the issues we have in this place. NYC and the entire state of California need to be kicked out of the US of A.

There are cruelty laws and "cleanliness" laws no matter how small your farm.not because she has found no laws governing for farms on

Also, if you sell any meat, milk or cheese, there are a shit load of regulations.
From usda and FDA approved cutting and processing equipment, sanitation protocol, packing regulation, weights and measure regulations, sales tax regulations, fair marketing regulations, vaccination regulations(even for organic produce).........and a bunch more.
Then if you employ anyone, a whole other list of regulations.
All this is imposed so the Government has control of the food. We would rely on food from other Countries and big Ag only. Hell there are stories out there where the Government pays farmer NOT to plant their crops...

My wife's Aunt lived in the city of Buffalo and I used to pick her up once a month and bring her to our house (farm country) for the weekend. On the way to my house once we got into Darien where the farms and the smell starts.
She would always take a breath and say, ahh the fresh air it's wonderful. She originally lived in farm country and missed it.

Glad to see the town voted against the bill.
Small towns/communities can be some of the best places to live. However, they can also be the worst if the people in govt decide to abuse their power and go after individuals. I've seen this happen on more than one occasion and it can make life rather unpleasant.
