ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A helicopter with a shooter will fly over a portion of the vast Gila Wilderness in southwestern New Mexico next week, searching for feral cows to kill.

The Gila National Forest issued the decision amid pressure from environmental groups who raised concerns about nearly 150 cattle whose hooves and mouths are damaging streams and rivers. Ranchers, meanwhile, have criticized the plan to shoot cows from a helicopter as animal cruelty. They said the action violates federal regulations and will be problematic when carcasses are left to rot.
The New Mexico Cattle Growers’ Association estimates roughly 90 grazing parcels are vacant in New Mexico and Arizona. Increased use of public lands — including hunting and hiking — also has resulted in knocked-down fences, the association said. Elk, too, are to blame for damaging fences meant to keep cows in check.


Tom Paterson, chair of the association’s wildlife committee, said the group has tried to find a solution that wouldn’t involve shooting feral cattle. He pointed to a recent directive issued by the New Mexico Livestock Board that allows neighboring permittees to gather and herd the cattle out.
Environmentalists in dozens of lawsuits filed in courts around the West over the years have argued that cattle ruin the land and water by trampling stream banks. They applauded the Forest Service’s decision.

“We can expect immediate results — clean water, a healthy river and restored wildlife habitat,” said Todd Schulke, co-founder of the Center for Biological Diversity.

The position marks a shift from the environmental community’s stance on shooting other wildlife — from a fight over protecting bison at the Grand Canyon to annual complaints about the actions of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, an agency often vilified for killing birds, coyotes, wolves, mountain lions and other animals.

150 cows? I dont know, but it seems to me in a land mass that large 150 cows wouldnt be such an environmental emergency. Have a special 2 week hunting season on them and they'll be put to good use. I'd jump at the chance to go out and harvest a cow, thats a lot of burgers.

They didn't come off a USDA approved Feed-Lot, and somebody getting free meat would complain and file a Lawsuit...Best you could do is set up a Truck as a portable slaughtering station; cut out the choice parts, and move on....While Hogs are a whole different animal, for the most part they're left to rot.

USDA culls Deer on Ft, Drum every year; upwards of a thousand animals isn't unusual, and there are folks that take advantage of those downed animals. Interestingly enough they (Government Shooters) use suppressed/subsonic rifles, shoot from vehicles, and hunt over bait piles (usually Apples)

I’ll bet most of the land they are on has no grass. Yes they do damage stuff and I get it and why they want to stop this before it gets out of hand but shooting them and letting them rot isn’t the best course of action. As other said let people hunt them or ranchers come get them.

That's the problem. We're only allowed to eat what they tell us we can.

I know a lot of the meat would go to waste due to the effort but a lot could be saved.

Meat bird breeders have offered to sell millions of extra eggs to help bring egg costs down. Due to FDA regs they aren't allowed to due to the refrigeration requirements. The thing is eggs don't need to be refrigerated until they've been washed but because those eggs aren't refrigerated in a "timely manner" they won't use them

If you give hunting permits, its not to kill them for resale, just like deer season, one permit, one cow for personal consumption. Game animals dont come from USDA approved feed lots.

My contention was in regards to having government workers or possible even NGO's collect, kill, and process the animals opposed to leaving them for the worms.
I've got no problem with Feral bovines being hunted and harvested, and there's at least a little money to be made with Licenses and Permits, but like most things ,gov becomes involved with, it'll be totally FUBAR.

Same here where I live. Around 2,000 cows just West of me and another 2,000 ish cows just North of me. And another 1,000+ cows a little further down the road. There are more cows than people here. LOL

Mrs. Shadow Rider and I were camping in the Gila back in '89. We had set up along a creek bed about 3 miles off the beaten path. We were awaken in the morning by a rather large free range bull ambling along the creek bed (nice set of horns). He made enough noise to alert us to his presence but caused no harm as he went on his way. The creek bed was non the worse for wear! I would think a good rain does more "damage" to a stream bed than a few meandering cows.

I dont know how many cows are in my area, but this 100 or so come running like a stampede when Beau sings to them and I dont see any damage around the creek they cross. Hope they dont send helicopters to shoot them, the idiots may mistake Beau for one of them long eared environmental hazards.
