I'd like to see a control without the candle just breathing under the blanket. No doubt the candle will help. Curious to see how much just breathing helps. I've slept outside in below freezing weather with just a blanket just for the experience, it's fucking rough.

I would imagine some people didn't have regular blankets, just pile them up on you. I have a feeling someone these people had other heath problems. All of us have plenty of blankets and cold weather clothing. These people got caught with their pants down for sure.

When I was stationed in Kansas, the winter nights would get freezing. Sometimes so cold, the tires would freeze to the ground throughout the night.
I was part of a team of two and most nights we would sleep in the Hummer, we could not run the engine so I always brought a few candles to take away the chill. It worked every time. It was never warm, but warmer.

Yes it is rough.
The thing is when we say a blanket in the cold that can be quite arbitrary because we will have to
say how we are exactly setup, what do you have at your feet (bottom), type of blanket, size and thickness,
wind, etc....
I remember reading about a guy who designed a shelter for the homeless that is super light like a small
dome and it is nothing but two layers of hard plastic with some honey comb pattern in between so
that gives small pockets of air between the two layers that is (air) the best and easiest insulation one
can fine.
Not only that, the thing was super light, water proof and wind proof and could be warmed up with a small
alcohol lamp that could be used to warm up soup.
A simple kit that would safe lives in the worse imaginable conditions.

I have used a candle in my small tent when camping in cold weather. It makes a noticeable difference.
I have a small sump room in the basement that doesn't get heated well. I have raised the temperature a few degrees just by turning on a light bulb in that space.
I was camping in the winter by myself when I was young and foolish and I realized I was beginning to suffer from hypothermia. It was very difficult to pitch my tent and get into my sleeping bag. Just before I got into the bag I was shaking uncontrollably. Thank God it was a nice dry -20 degree bag. I shivered for about 1/2 an hour and then warmed up enough I felt I could allow myself to go to sleep.

A human puts out about 300.
It's not much, but for a small well insulated space it could make a big difference.

A couple of tea lights under a doubled up terracotta pot will make a room heater. Takes about 20 minutes to get the outside pot to around 160-180°

Even a can of sterno would help. In the past I have carried one in my car however it will evaporate over time. With a candle one would have much needed assistance starting a fire if one needed to do so. Having a zippo hand warmer maybe would work also. They don't produce many BTU's but having finger dexterity would be worth it in a survival situation. We all sit back and say what can I do to improve my get home bag . In my job the farthest away from home is around 60 miles I have a bad knee and bad hip. ,,, Not bad enough to get a replacement. according to my doctor. No idea on how many days it would take to get home. ... Just looking for all the help I could get. I do know where there is a bike shop near my farthest point ..I always carry cash on me . We look at everything to get an edge . We could have a breakdown of society sooner than we think. .
A few years back due to a change in policy at work I ended up sleeping in my truck during my off shift. On more then one occasion I woke up in the morning with the temp inside the truck at 3 F. Had a three candle camp lantern that I modified in to a heater. Gave me about 5 degrees of heat overall. Better but not life saving. A good sleeping bag is the key

Look at the problem in terms of Btu/sf or Btu/cubic foot. Small space less heat, big space big heat.
My wife n I work outside lots in the fall, sometimes in light snow, early morning frost. Couple of these in the gloves and two more in inside pockets and it keeps us functioning. When I've camped at 10 and 15 below, a couple in my sleeping bag make a big difference. I keep a dozen in my car emergency bag and some in my bug out supplies. They seem to have a shelf life but we rotate them so we've never had any problems. But you keep them inside your jacket and they help a lot. No carbon monoxide issue as far as I'm aware of.

Candles don't put out much heat. You'd be be better off spending your efforts better insulating yourself to keep in your body heat (blankets, sleeping bags, etc.).
