how was the serial num defaced ? oh it was a decommissioned item and cut up to sell as parts and then someone can fix it buy welding it back together making it look all new and sell it WTF ..

There is little chance this vet did not know it was an illegal machinegun, with the serial number scratched out.
It's not as if things were any less enforced in the 80's - the NFA laws were pursued aggressively throughout the whole decade (indeed, since it's adoption, it's always been enforced).
There were some M14s sold where the selectors were welded so they could not shoot full auto, which ATF said were still machineguns due to the receiver configuration. That was an unfortunate mess but it doesn't sound like this is one of those.
Yes, the guy is a veteran, and this reminded him of his service weapon. That's unfortunate, but he still broke the law, whether we like the law or not or think it's constitutional we still must comply or risk this result.
I will say this is a good case for DJT to issue some clemency. Sending a 70 year old to prison for this is awful.

I read the comments and one guy commented that his own daughter a Hilary Clinton supporter turned him in. Who knows, but sounds about right in this day and age. One less Cruz vote and Beto might win.
This has something to do with the mother's death, guaranteed. The daughter probably turned him in to get the inheritance.

I got lucky when that happened with us. My mother's father had a lot of stuff. My uncle took 2 rifles he brought back. The grandsons each got a photo album (he carried a camera the whole time he was overseas). I got his Army dress jacket. A few years after he died, we were rummaging through his tool shed and I found three bayonets wrapped in oil cloth, one American, two German. I kept two and gave one to my Green Beret cousin. Nothing valuable, just sentimental. When my father's father passed, he didn't have much. My aunt took his dress Navy jacket and I got a pair of Navy pants I found while cleaning his house out.

Well, the true story is out. From another board:
- The guy stole the M14 while in the Marines. He told a buddy he hid it at the range during marksmanship and returned later. He scratched out the serial number himself.
- The guy has also sorts of drug problems.
- The guy had made crazy threats to people.
