Whether the cop had justification for a felony stop at this point is unknown. It doesn't look like it now. But I want to hear his side of the story too.

No, of course not. Im pointing out the dangers that resisting arrest has. Right or wrong. Maybe the cop is a killer, maybe he misjudged an action, maybe poor training whatever, the point is, there is a very real chance you can get killed.

Call it what you want, that is the reality of it. Your putting your life into the hands of a stranger who may or may not be good person, trained person , a person who is going on 16th hours of no sleep and his judgment is clouded whatever. A cop makes a mistake and your dead. you do something stupid, your dead. That woman that shot that kid the other day for example. shes an idiot, but thats not getting that kids life back . it was a mistake , and it cost that kid his life. He put himself into that situation. His choice to play gangster and run away from probably a minor charge ..

He should not have been killed. but it happened. It happened because he resisted . Look at the guy selling cigarettes'in NJ a few years ago. resisted arrested and died in the struggle . For what?

Better to fight them in court than in the street. No good thing ever came from resisting arrest.

No good thing ever came from persuing an arrest over BS like selling loose cigarettes either.

And for the record, neither this Lt, nor Mr Castile had any intention of "resisting arrest".

Their goal was yo go home to *their* family that night.

Neither of them had done anything wrong. Neither had any motive to resist, other than the fear that an overzealous cop might kill them for no good reason. Turns out that fear was quite justified.

So, ask yourself, why did this Lt act the way he did ? He had no warrants, he wasn't even guilty of the violation they were pulling him over for. By all accounts the cops should have let him go with a simple "have a nice day" after a brief stop.

Do, why did he act this way ? Was his fear justified ?

I think a number of high profile incidents recently, and the demeaner of these cops in particulaf fully justified his fear. Certainly comments like "you're fixing to ride the lightening" reinforced his fear.

If he believed the world works the way you do, sure, he would have followed your advice. But given the way these officers were acting reaching for that seatbelt could have gotten him killed.

I think in this case, this Lt made the right call.

I think unbuckling that seatbelt with officer itchy McTriggerfinger drawn down on you would have been asking to get shot.

This guy only did it because he honestly believed that following those orders was more likely to get him killed than doing what he did.

The question you need to ask is *why* does an honest upstanding citizen who has done nothing wrong feel that way ?

And the answer to that is because there are officers out there who feel justified shooting people when they shouldn't.

Let me ask you, why did these officers feel justified in pointing a loaded gun at this guy ? We all know you don't point a gun at anything you're not willing to shoot.

If any civilian had done that they would be charged. What exception is there in the law for cops for that ?

This is not a ""my authority"" problem, this is a safety issue.. The person your dealing with has the legal authority to take your life.

No, no, no, a thousand times no. Where did this godforsaken mindset come from? A civilian law enforcement officer does not have any more authority to take your life than I do. They are tasked with keeping the peace, they are provided with means and training to respond with appropriate force. That is not the same thing as carte blanche authority to take a life. That concept does not exist in this nation, and would have been completely repugnant to the great minds who were responsible for its founding. The only legal authority to take a life in this nation is a jury of your peers issuing a death penalty for crimes committed which bear that penalty.

This is what happens when you treat a civilian peacekeeping apparatus as another branch of the military, with its wars being waged against the citizenry from which it comes. This is what happens when you absolve the peacekeepers of punishment for blatant wrongdoing under the guise of “just doing my job ma’am”. And this is what happens when society as a whole abandons the concepts of personal accountability and respect for one another.

That video doesn't show anything about what Philando was doing all it shows is what the officer did.

If Philando reaching for his wallet was sufficient cause for the officer to feel his life was in jeopardy and shoot him, then why isn't everyone else justified in shooting any cop with a drawn weapon ?

It's either a deadly threat or it's not.

Your badge doesn't give you any additional authority to use *deadly* force than anyone else.

The orders were contradictory , coming from three officers at the same time. But its not an impossibility to tell the cops your getting out and need to unbuckle. Unless they are intentionally trying to exacute you they will allow you to.

I don’t agree with the officer’s actions. I would not have conducted the stop that way based on current info.
I will say, I tell my wife and kids to keep license easily accessible and that if pulled over to:

1- place license and reg on dash
2-roll down the windows
3-unbuckle seat belt
4- turn off ignition
5-hands on steering wheel while waiting for instructions

It’s better to be safe. I would bet nearly all, if not all, of these controversial shootings would not happen. I get it that noone likes being pulled over and especially when you get that officer that is unprofessional. It’s just better to contact a lawyer afterward and file a complaint.

and it goes to a felony stop .. .. what if this was a young lady driving 10 miles to a safe area to pull over at night ..

I always like to see the entire video prior to making a decision. I will back my statement a bit; from the bit of video that I saw, I back the Soldier.

Soldiers have a good place in my heart and mind, like stated, aside from a few errors in decision making, this Soldier did little wrong.

The cop made a few statements that kind of show his mindset. One of the first questions. "What are you, a Private or a Specialist". I will bet that the Soldiers skin color made him ask about the lower rank.

I do not agree with you guys siding with the cops.....at all.
First the guy drives a mile or so before he pulls over.....then refuses to do ANYTHING the cops ask. Right or wrong he should have just obeyed.
More people, including black males, are shot by cops because of EXACTLY what thus guy did.
I would bet that if he just complied he would have ended up driving away with a warning. These cops were not racist, they followed their protocol. The guy refused to stop, then refused to follow lawful orders. If this guy would have complied for a simple traffic thing, im pretty sure the cops would have treated him respect and they probably would have thanked him for his service and shook his hand.
But no.....he had to play the entitled guy he thought he was. He was rolling his eyes constantly and could not wait to throw the " Im a lieutenant " out there. Thankfully the cops were not impressed.
Most likely an ROTC officer graduate and not very respected.
I know every SGT and LT I worked with would have pulled over, done what they are told and ended up joking around with the officers.
This video made my blood boil....thats not how officers I served with would have acted.....but they were not entitled brats.

Their response was NOT reasonable, but would a rational and reasonable person believe they were armed robbers or just douchebag cops? I think MOST people would think they are douchebag cops. Thats all Im saying, its an important distinction if ever someone finds themselves in that situation.

At this point you cant say that with any certainty, He may have had every legal right to conduct a felony stop based on what he knew at the moment. We dont know for sure. For the moment , Ill give you the benefit of the doubt . But that can change based on new information.

Did a black man, white car camo shirt just rob a 7-11? beat his wife? was there a high speed chase? We dont know what happened prior to the video . As it stands now, yes your correct, its a rouge cop playing cowboy .

Your original statement was “has the legal authority to take your life”. This is an entirely different phrase than “use whatever force is necessary to effect an arrest”.

I’m not arguing the latter phrase. I’m arguing the former, and I reiterate my position that a police officer does not have legal authority to take a life... that is reserved for a jury. Whether or not the action of an arrest involves escalation requiring deadly force is a separate issue. Relevant, certainly, but separate.
