Remember the stories about British sailors, scurvy and lime?
I read a book on scurvy couple of years ago. A fully fed, caloried human can die of vitamin C deficiency in one season. In the book it was noted that American Indians did not suffer scurvy much. Investigation and research showed that deer naturally produce vitamin C and it is stored in their liver. Indians ate that liver and it is believed that was the source of their vitamin C in the winter when plant based greens as a source of vitamin C were not available. I have to believe liver from other herbivores would yield this benefit. No liver for the dog.
