Just went to Walmart last night. No cash sales on self-serve lines. This is probably theft related.

Not really.
They keep having problems getting the machines restocked with cash to dispense, so they can't accept cash in case change is needed.
The theft is when someone substitutes a UPC code from something cheap on top of the normal UPC code on the box. Or when someone scans one item but has four or five in their cart.
But there is only one attendant who has to monitor ALL of the self-serve registers, including the ones that are still belt-fed aisles.
And with most stores cutting back on the "greeters", there's no one left to try to stop people.

All they have to do is install mantraps when the security sensors or if management believes there is theft occurring.
Anyone that has a proper receipt and can show the goods before walking past the second door is free to go.
Take it one step further, no exit unless you scan your receipt to open the door.
This falls under Shopkeeper's privilege.
Having that and allowing armed security and good people with guns around the store will make it much less appealing to rob a store. Then it can allow the store to do as they please with how the shoplifted acted. (Whether to let them go or wait for the police.)

Shopkeeper's privilege allows a shopkeeper to detain a suspected shoplifter on store property for a reasonable period of time, so long as the shopkeeper has cause to believe that the person detained in fact committed, or attempted to commit, theft of store property.
If I went through one of your checkouts, your own employee scanned everything and bagged it up and then I paid them we are even up and there is exactly zero cause to believe i have stolen anything. Most people immediately leave after checkout, so you'd have to have some sort of reasonable suspicion I stole something between the checkout and exit which takes all of 30 seconds or less to cover that ground.

Wal-Mart better start talking to imbeciles like Bragg and Whorechul. Their policies that both completely restrict police officers from making lasting arrests and allowing criminals to walk free with zero penalty are the cause. Point blank. BJ's I show my receipt. That's part of the whole club deal you sign with them.
Walmart or any other straight up retailer can KMA if they try to request my receipt. Once I pay I own it. It would be no different than them asking to see a receipt for the underwear I'm wearing.
Once again, warehouse clubs are a different story. You sign up for that when you become a member.

They have a line of people with shopping cards full of goods, and the "greeters" have 5 seconds each to reconcile the receipt with the contents of the cart.
If you give a guy 10 mins worth of work and 20 seconds to do it, it's not his fault when he fails.

Yellow vest at the vestibule are either asset protection or greeters. It depends on the stores shrink percentage as to what ones they get.
Greeters are just there, AP are trained to look for carts with unbagged items and ask for receipts. That's really all they can do and if someone says no they aren't supposed to take it any farther, but just let them walk and document.
Plain clothes AP working on the sales floor are the ones who are trained to make shoplifting stops.

The one I miss is Service Merchandise... and the system they used (a modern version of it anyway) would seriously reduce crime now probably.
Some of you younger fellas might not even remember it, but when I was young that was a cool 'everything' place to shop. My first firearm (A Marlin 25) came from there, circa '89-ish I think. They had an interesting system where most of the stock wasn't out on the floor; instead almost everything was a floor model and you marked down item numbers onto a paper sheet. There was also a section with catalogs that you could get item numbers from and find some stuff that didn't have floor models. You gave the sheet to somebody and they pulled all the stuff from the warehouse for you to get at checkout.
I can immediately think of many ways you could do something like that much better with modern tech and not have everything out to just grab. If I'm not mistaken, I believe I've seen videos of folks in Japanese stores that work like that. I'm not entirely sure they really want to stop crime though.

On top of that, the entire warehouse can be automated now. You probably don't need a single human to operate a Service Merchandise type store anymore.

It would be like one giant vending machine.
I was also thinking that they can keep the Walmarts open, but only do pickup only. Just use the floor space as a warehouse. Possibly automate it further. Only theft would then be workers or worse, robots.
I never use self checkout for a couple reasons.
1. I don't work there. I don't need to ring the register at a restaurant. I'm not doing it there either.
2. Liability. If their employee makes a miss scan that's their fault. If I make a miss scan that's theft.

According to Walmart, the retail behemoth will be going fully self-checkout and/or "Scan & Go" by the end of 2021. That's right, there could be a time and real soon that you go to Walmart and you'll no longer see cashiers or manned checkout lanes- you'll likely see self-checkout "hosts"
