Wasserman Schultz appointed to House committee charged with oversight of Donald Trump
S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is becoming a member of a key House committee that Democrats will use to conduct oversight of President Donald Trump and his administration.
The House Committee on Oversight and Reform has a broad mandate to conduct investigations.
Trump is the committee’s highest-profile business. On Feb. 7, Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, is scheduled to testify.
In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she would “demand swift accountability from this White House. ... The long neglect of meaningful House oversight on our nation’s most serious problems in recent years ends now with Democrats serving in the majority in the House.”
Wasserman Schultz has been an outspoken critic of Trump before and since his election.
As the transition from outgoing to incoming president continued Monday, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston, former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, transitioned from outspoken advocate for one president to vocal critic of another.

In her eighth term representing parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, Wasserman Schultz is also on the Appropriations Committee. In 2017, she pushed appropriations amendments that would have embarrassed the president by revoking son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner’s security clearance. They were blocked by Republicans, who were then in the majority.
Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., is planning to investigate pharmaceutical industry pricing. And Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will testify before the committee in March over the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
Wasserman Schultz wants the committee to examine problems with hurricane recovery and the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents when families illegally cross the border into the United States.
