Fund Raising Companies are hired for a percentage of donations, and one of the methods they employ is to send low cost items to guilt you into joining/donating, and as for calling; once they have you on the line it starts out high and keeps dropping until you either bite or hang up.
ALL organizations, associations, lobbyists, groups, societies, et.al NEED funding...many are legitimately a good thing, but the bigger it gets, the easier it is to corrupt and exploit....ASPCA pays its CEO a million a year, while the local shelters beg for fucking cans of Cat Food. American Red Cross is another one, American Cancer Society, pick a big name and see what the Leadership is paid versus what actually goes to the target.
