New York State is exploring the potential for a fee-based saltwater fishing license to provide revenue to enhance recreational saltwater fishing and management.

Currently, 23 of the 26 U.S. coastal states have a fee-based saltwater license, however, there are many factors that must be considered if New York were to pursue a similar license - most importantly, feedback from anglers.

Your input matters! Anglers are encouraged to complete this short, anonymous survey as one of the first steps to help determine how New York could pursue a license. Your responses will help gauge interest in developing a recreational saltwater fishing license and provide information on how a potential license could be used to support fishing efforts important to you.

I got that same email.
Reminds of years ago I paid for a lifetime saltwater license...
Then for reasons I've forgotten, NY decided they didn't want to do that after all, and sent me my money back.

I don't have much faith in NY being able to use the revenue "...to enhance recreational saltwater fishing and management."

It's a shame really. My nature always was to be a supportive outdoorsman, but my opinion of this state of ours has degraded so badly, I just can't bring myself to throw money at it.

The NY salt water license is more of a registry. No fee but you need to renew every year. Freshwater license is different and requires a fee.

They tried this already an it failed. They actually mailed people back the $10 fee they charged. Our freshwater fee goes towards fish stocking programs so they cant justify charging for saltwater. They also tried charging people for a fishing license in Ireland (i have family there) an there was an uproar an protests at city hall. It got voted down. The hunting license is also free.
people in other countries are very good at protesting against unjust laws being past. Unlike here where the government does whatever it wants an we just vent about it on social media an keep wearing out dont tread on me shirts.

I'm not sure what to think about a saltwater licenses...there are places and times where it just isn't justified, others where is should be demanded.

NYDEC is the bastard child of the State; little funding, hard work, shitty hours and no support unless its for the Governors Photo-op.

I believe Florida put a LOT of time, effort and research into their program, and while NY doesn't like anything that's not their idea, they'd be wise to look at it before going full retard.

I've said it before. DEC is not the old conservation department. It was merged with the environmental quality programs from the dept. of health and became a regulatory, environmental/social justice/political tool of the governor's office.

The fish and wildlife programs of old with roots in real management used to be national leaders...no more. Politics reaches down to the lowest professional levels.

Yeah, buy a marine fishing license. Make sure you call and let them know when and where you're going fishing and where you bought bait and report back within 24 hours. And don't clean any catch until they inspect it. And then expect a license price to increase and a special stamp for each species....
