weapons inventory list / catalog

well overdue on a creating a current inventory of arms and weapons.. I know what I have,, but I'd like to make a digital copy of my collection mostly for my kids, and it wouldn't be a bad idea for insurance reasons also.. looking for advice on how to create this on a computer.. I run windows 10, but I don't believe I have windows office.. looking for something I can update and burn to a cd and keep on file / print.. I 'd like to make columns for the following..
: make
: model
: serial #
: caliber
: origin , came from me, my father , grandfather , ect..
: special notes ,, on collectability, manufacturer stamps , values.
I know of one computer repair shop that may possibly take interest in such a project as they have gun signs all over their shop and openly pack sometimes.. but if I can tackle this myself all the better..
anything I'm missing or advice how to create a running list I can update from time to time speak up please... thanks

If you don't have excel then you can try your note pad but that won't be very neat and more cumbersome to use.

tried to open excel,, it said the same answer my wife tells me .. I'm out of date..
had to redo my Microsoft password,, I think I'm getting a office update now.. I also have my youngest coming home from Brockport this weekend..

While I'm all for preparation and organization, it came across my mind that this might be a not so good idea, along the lines of DNA heritage testing. Without donning the tinfoil hat, you have all your sensitive information in an electronic format which could at some point be compromised. I don't think it would be too difficult for someone with the proper motivation / agenda to get into your system and extract all that info. Again, like the organization and forethought, but just a potential downside.

If you do go that route, EXCEL sounds like the way to go. Someone with even a little knowledge can set something up pretty quick that's more than adequate for what you need.

my biggest reason for doing so is simply so my son's will have the knowledge of where these guns came from .. I have guns that go back to my great grandfather. just thought they should be left the history of the collection ..

Do you have a hard copy Accusition/Disposition book? I have two plus a ring binder notebook with my entire collection in them.
I have notes on special guns as well who gets what upon my death.
I don't do the computer that go to do a spread sheet on this information.

This. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe, with disposition instructions. I would very strongly advise against putting any information of this sort in any electronic device or format. In the event of your demise, make it as simple as possible. Sealed inventory/instructions, possibly with locations, sealed with will and filed with attorney.
