I think it could be a great idea . I believe it will be private ,not government run. American companies will bid on contracts to make packaged meals which will be made with ingredients produced here in the USA by local workers. They will still provide half of the benefits though EBT cards.

The problem is not what food people are getting, it's what food they're not getting usually. There is a percentage of folks that illegally sell food stamps for usually half the price of their value and pocket the money. These types of people are usually fat fucks that have several or more children in order to get over a $1000 or more addition added each month on their ebt card. They drive around in mercedes and have more expendable money than most people around them even though they haven't worked a job since 1980 or ever. These people are using them to sell, but also to buy things like lottery tickets and cigarettes. Many places in certain jurisdictions accept food stamps at all sorts of stores and restaurants. This switch, which would not work in much of any capacity realistically, would drop sales of most grocery stores just under 10%, so they're not going to be for it at all either. The shipments of food present more costs and probability of failures and errors as well. Many people that have allergies or can only eat certain types of food will be very limited, especially those elderly, disabled in some manner that no longer have the option to choose healthier options. The problem is the misuse and illegal use and sale of them, illegal immigrants taking advantage of the system, not what good/poor quality food people decide to buy.

The max per person is under $200 for a month.

It happens everyday at the local Tops where my friend manages. Also at the big box store my GF manages.
Its completely legal and infuriating to watch.
Where do they get food for the rest of the month? Who knows.
Check out facebook and Craigslist. People selling access to their EBT card at 50 cents on the dollar.

Why not do it like tje WIC system.
Each person get individual items on their card.
You get a gallon of milk a week per kid, loaf of bread per kid and 1 of each item per adult couple.........etc
So, a family of 4 would get 3 gallons of milk, 3 loves of bread...........no soda and very little junk.
No boxing or delivery, you buy food as normal but its all rationed for you.

How many of you have ever gone to a FOOD BANK ?

For about a year I helped some very frail seniors go to them.

Imagine getting in line at 6AM, for a Food Bank that opens at 9AM - in sub-zero temperatures.

SPANISH SPEAKERS show up just before 9AM - IN PACKS.

They push you away, laughing.

And instantly grab the always meagre supplies of any decent food local markets have donated.

You are stuck with endless cans of TOMATO SAUCE (but no pasta), PEANUT BUTTER, Sodium-filled canned peas, rotted donated produce, and small bags of Rice.

Let me tell you about that Rice - look close - very close - the Rice is MOVING. There be WEEVILS in there !

Now to be honest, the Weevils are totally edible. I've eaten them.

But if they grow and FLY - you have a PANTRY MOTH INFESTATION that is difficult to impossible to eradicate.

I don't care if US CITIZENS spend their EBT on Bon-Bons.

But the ILLEGALS deserve NOTHING.

One thing many do not understand is that there are TWO TYPES of EBT Cards.

One works as CASH - and can be used to buy almost anything.

The other is what my wife's blind and retarded clients get - FOOD ONLY.

Those who get FOOD ONLY EBT really can't afford to piss away their meagre $200 a month on Rib Eye.

If they are doing so, or even SELLING their EBT benefits, they are either desperate Drug Addicts, or, more likely ILLEGAL ALIEN FRAUDSTERS. The husband works for cash so on paper the family appears to be very poor. But they are actually well off.

I also volunteered at a Food Pantry for a while.

When it got cold (like now), I noticed many of the .. umm .. "immigrant-style faces" were missing. I asked fellow volunteers if it were just too cold for them to come out ? They said no, most RETURNED TO THEIR HOME COUNTRIES DURING THE WORST OF THE WINTER.

THEY could afford to go on WINTER VACATIONS, unlike the vast majority of the AMERICAN clients who were barely getting by !

The problem is the abuse. I want people to take risks and try to start businesses. I don’t believe in their being no safety net.

That being said, I think two things need to change:

1) abusing welfare programs should be a serious offense. It should be counted as theft from the government. Give it jail time.

2) we do not encourage responsibility. If a family saves up for many years to send their kids to college, why do they get no aid at all — meanwhile people who blow all their money on luxuries have their kids get a full ride? We don’t encourage people to make the right decisions. This isn’t quite the same thing as the topic of welfare, but it illustrates the point of not rewarding good behavior.

When you collect EBT in NY you have to go to weekly meetings with a caseworker and show them proof of either volunteer work or job searching equal to 20 hours a week. Every three months you have to reapply.
A single person gets a maximum of 192 a month .Thats based on if he is making any money.

And somebody that's worked for decades and has dementia in their old age isn't getting any entitlements. They actually earned it.

I’ve seen people on disability while still having side jobs. I grew up in a neighborhood with a kid who’s father was on full disability from NYPD, while working off the books as security for an armored car service or something. Basically collecting two paychecks.

I worked at a factory where the second floor was dedicated to employing the disabled. The machines where all customized to be operated safely no matter what the particular disability. Every day, they - blind, missing limbs, malformed limbs, mentally challenged - would come in and put in a hard day's work, happy to be productive members of society, proud to work. When I see people that are perfectly able to work, or suffer from some minor ailment, but use it as an excuse to collect disability, it makes me sick.

I could have claimed disability over 25yrs ago. I refused and worked my ass off. One winter while laid off for 3mons I had food benies. A friend convinced me to. Living alone supporting my self .... I did for those 3mons only. I got 160/mo. I bought as much decent food i could and once those three mons were over ..... I never did again. I never allowed my self to collect unenjoyment again either. No one lays me off. I take care of myself. Proudly.

Sadly, that kind of Employment has become very scarce.
