One thing that many do not get....

A generation ago, so many Americans in their local communities would "come to the rescue" to assist others in the community.

While it still happens, it is rare. Neighbors would help others without needing a thank you or a shout out.

Food pantry's were full by individual donations.

You know, I got chickens. Too many chickens for my family's need.

I have no need to sell the extras, I give them away. I was taking a bunch to the Court building that people could just take home. I stopped in the past week or so, 2 different people complained that some of the FREE eggs were too small and that I must be hoarding the larger ones.

You’re absolutely right , and good on you for doing so. You’ll never be able to please Everyone. Those who complain don’t really matter. The ones who don’t complain and appreciate the help do and they’re the ones who do matter.
You’re correct about neighbors helping neighbors. When I was growing up that was the norm where I lived. When neighbors noticed another neighbor struggling they helped where and when they could even when some were too stubborn/ proud to accept it willingly.

I am picking up what you just placed down. I really am.

Where I live now, very poor area. Lots of poor people. Actually, massive amounts of them.

I know some of these people. Hard working, salt of the Earth kinds of folk.

Had a conversation with a couple of them today at the county building.

I do feel for them, both parents work, just not enough to cover all of their needs.

One lady I was talking to, she get food assistance for her family. She works, her husband works. One of the problems here, the rates of pay are very, very low. Even me, no empathy in most cases, I feel bad for her.

The system is so broken, needs to be mended. The only true way for it to end is to scrap it and retool who gets assistance and how they receive it.

Right again, the average wage scale in the south absolutely sucks and even hard working people are struggling because of it. Now I’m not saying that everyone should be paid ridiculous wages, that would obviously be counterproductive , but they should at least be paid a fair wage based on their skill level.

We all have seen people that are on welfare and food stamps for like forever. on the other hand some folks have a person in their life where in no fault of their own hit a bump. .. I have a cousin that married a man that was a gambled all the time ..Food stamps kept her and the children alive.
She did leave and after a few years found a good man and married him . For a while she had 3 kids under 4 years of age and really could not go to work . Just saying Don't paint everything with a broad brush.

Its time to end the socialist free handouts to able bodied people who can actually work. I`m sick of paying for their free fucking meals, free healthcare, free cellphones, free place to live. I'm not opposed to the concept of charity. It certainly has it's place in a civilized society.

But, it is a very dangerous drug. Just like opiates, it is important when it's necessary, and very dangerous if over used.

It also needs to be administered at a very local level. Too much bureaucracy and it gets misapplied.

I learned all this from my grandmother. Very active in her church and community. Always helping everyone, and eventually being helped when she finally needed it in return. She paid taxes her entire adult life too. Government wanted to take her house when she required more care than she could afford or the community could provide.

I hit a bump when my kids were born premature. All we needed from the nutrition fairy was special, expensive formula. They argued with my wife every single visit to take the other free shit and give it to a friend or family member. We refused. Just paying for formula with WIC was so incredibly embarrassing, as it should be for everyone.

I will never again accept "help" from the government. The goal now is to get my money back.

I'm actually shocked people were complaining about a free nice thing.

Are you sure it's not possible they were just teasing you and busting your balls or anything? Maybe it was just their way of trying to be sociable or funny and it got lost in translation.

If they genuinely were complaining the free eggs we good enough, damn that's a horrible indicator that even a poor area like yours people are entitled and have high expectations. When things go sideways imagine how people will respond when they can't get what they think they deserve anymore

Our Community has two programs: a Food Distribution center, Rohde Center - Ending Hunger Starts Here! and a "Back Pack" program at the District Schools. Our largest industry is Farming and the structures that revolve around it...there are a lot of dirt poor families, I knew of one with a Special Needs kid that literally didn't have electricity and by default running water and that's what charity if for, helping those that absolutely DO need it, but this generation bullshit has got to stop as does those abusing the system...that said, a few times a year someone will get arrested and charged with fraud/ineligibility and they get hammered pretty hard, I think someone gets made an example of to warn others not to try defrauding the programs.

I think it should be for a certain amount of time and one would not be eligible for another block of time. The only approved items would be dried rice, dried beans, powdered milk, vegetable oil and canned tomatoes at a certain amount per month per person.
Those are literally the only things one needs to have a balanced diet with enough calories to find a way to better yourself

Basically, in every area, there should be a warehouse filled with bags of quality staple foods... rice, beans, potatoes, maybe even eggs or things you suggest like canned tomatoes and vegetable oil. Anyone should be able to come in and pick them up... no ID, no verification, no nothing.

By doing this, we would eliminate huge amounts of administrative overhead. We would eliminate massive amounts of waste. We would eliminate massive amounts of fraud. We would eliminate lots of taxpayer-funded unhealthy eating habits. And no one would have any excuse for going hungry.

I can go down the road and buy a 50lb bag of the best potatoes you've ever had for $17. I can go the other way down the road and buy 30 eggs for $5, so fresh that they're still warm from the chicken... even double-yolk eggs, if I want (same price!). A 50lb bag of potatoes, 50lb bag of rice, and 90 eggs would completely feed one person for a month - every meal until they're as full as they can be - for about $50, with plenty leftover.

I'm not all for taxpayer-funded charity, but if we're going to do it, this plan is a hell of a lot better than the frozen pizza/soda/chips plan that is currently in place, rife with fraud, and bloated with administration.

Somebody worked their ass off to produce that food. Why should anyone get it for free?

Maybe the hungry people can work out a deal with the farmer to help harvest the food in exchange for a share of the harvest? You know, kind of like a job.
