There are of course exceptions but that demographic is generally stupid, lazy, mentally ill, and do not really want to better themselves. Its easier to take a handout, make endless bad decisions, have zero pride or class, and have nothing all while complaining how hard they have it. Have a stroll around the low income neighborhoods in your area. Why will there be garbage strewn around the houses? Why will the children be filthy and playing unsupervised in the street? Why are the residents so poor they cant do better but will sit on their porch drinking beer and smoking cigarettes talking about getting a new tattoo?
In NY you can already get a tuition free degree with very loose requirements. How many people on assistance take advantage of that program? I live in an impoverished area, but employers struggle daily to find people for entry level jobs. People just do not want to work or make their lives better.

You already are doing that. Look up excelsior program for college. Free if your household needs bone is $125,000 or below in NYS. You pay fees but that’s it. Many below this income get it for free federally. All I’m talking about doing is making it so they get what they get now, but for a much shorter time frame with a little bit of guidance. I’m actually talking about greater restrictions because I want to limit their free college/education choice to a marketable skill that will create an ROI. Then after that is done they can’t get free handouts anymore. So we’d have productive members of society instead of people sitting on assistance for decades that turn into generations. This would not be voluntary but a condition to receive free government benefits.
Go to college or learn a skill in a set timeframe or you go hungry on the streets. Right now we feed them and house them from conception to death and lay for everything in between. I can assure you my plan is cheaper and better for society than what’s happening now.

Well that option would be off the table. You go for benefits and you get assessed to what will be a good fit for you. You say no your benefits are denied. You say yes and a plan is put in place. You get x amount of time to make it happen and get a job or the checks stop coming. Once people are gainfully employed we would see a massive ROI. I get some disagree with me and that’s fine. I also have no issue supporting truly disabled people medically or mentally. I’m not talking minor mental issues either. The current system is a complete failure by design. My plan at least has a chance of success.
The drug addict across the street from me with a masters degree and decades of teaching is going on government assistance for everything right now. This is wrong. He’s smart and educated. Drugs ruined his life by his choices. He should not get this and yet he will.

A factory closure, your job getting eliminated, etc. can happen to anyone. I don't mind assistance for those people while they get things sorted out. Shame for greed (applies to individuals and businesses).

And most especially, Shame for politicians grifting the American people, violating their rights, and proverbially spitting on the flag and the Constitution.

I worked at a grocery store as a kid. Every 1st like clockwork a 300lb woman with her 5 kids would come in to exploit the system. She would sit on a bench near the front desk and send the children out to shop. They each got a food stamp and would buy one packet of unsweetened kool-aid for $.07. They would get $.93 back in change, give it to mom and continue the cycle. Mom would buy scratch offs with the money while they ran wild in the store.

I would see it at Byrne Dairy with glass milk bottles. They’d buy the milk with the EBT card, dump the milk in the parking lot. Then return the glass bottle for the deposit, which couldn’t go back on their EBT card so it was given in cash.

Food stamps should be more like WIC checks used to be. List out what you can get…milk, bread, eggs, meat, beans, rice, etc and how many of each.

It should not be free money to buy whatever they want. Supplemental! Not the whole grocery bill.

The most recent nonsense I have seen are people buying cases of small plastic bottles of water; popping the tops off and dumping the entire cases over to drain the water out; and then going back inside to claim the 5 cent deposits per bottle…

I just don't understand. During the dotcom bust in the 90's I was out of work for almost a year. We survived on our small savings and then credit cards the entire time. Yeah, I got unemployment, but it wasn't much, and I had to pony up for Cobra (we had 3 children to cover). After I finally found a job we spent years paying those cards down. I never went to a food bank or applied for any social services.
