They work similar to red dots but green is easier for the human eye to see.

The answer is already out there but just for the sake of information I'll add that the online indicator changes slightly depending on what theme you are using. Your personal color scheme / theme for the site can be changed in the bottom left corner of any page on the site. As for the indicator, it isn't a green dot in the Light style, but rather a green sort of overlay triangle on the upper left hand corner of people's avatars.
I sometimes wonder if the ability to change themes / color schemes in an underemphasized feature and some people may not realize it's available.

I didn't know there were other themes, but I like the default theme anyway.
That’s the only one I like too. It’s comfortable for my eyes.
We used to have a few more variants but have consolidated somewhat because it's a huge pain when changing code on certain parts of the site, changing logos for special occasions, things like that. Everything has to be done for each core theme , but cores can have variants. Now its essentially just Light or Dark. Dark is a core with variants that change certain text colors , while Light is a separate core entirely. Now we only have to do things twice, as altering something (like the logo) on the main dark theme will effect all of it's variants.
Eventually I'll/We'll probably make a dark variant that has lighter text because while some colors do change, the greyish text is all the same and I feel like some people might like it lighter (I would). It's just never at the forefront of my thoughts because I personally use the Light style.
