Yes, but that can still extend your range, even more if you're in an area with multiple linked repeaters.
Or invest in a better radio that has D-star capability or the other equivalent system which I forgot the name.

There are very few if any at least here in NYS that are linked via radio radio frequencies only. Most are linked via internet with systems like Echolink.

years ago the HAM repeaters here i used from the Club in Bath NY. .. there system was all linked via Radio

Bath repeater was linked to one in PA and to the one in Dansville , which was linked to a repeater in Bristol

just hitting any one of repeaters and you were talking from Bristol up north to the PA in the south ..

the Club that had the Groveland Repeater had a bunch of linked ones too .. one was in buffalo ..

I used to climb the towers for repairs .. the Dansville tower was 200 feet and the Bristol was 150 ..

haven't been active in HAM for a while so no clue what the setup is now .. i know a few Repeaters were moved over the last few yrs ..

i did the same when i was up at the top of the Dansville Tower .. lean back and go simplex and enjoy the view

PS i fking hate ladders .. 6 foot step ladders and even 10 foot ones .. shit i hate all ladders .. LOL ..

No, I don’t believe so. I think that the 5 MURS frequencies are hard coded into it. Edit: Yeah, they are, because it's a certified MURS transmitter.

If you aren't 100% concerned about by the letter legality, get a BTech UV-82C instead, program in the MURS frequencies, and then you can add the NOAA ones as well (and more if you're so inclined). They are virtually identical hardware wise, and once programmed are really quite simple to operate. My kids swipe my UV-82 all the time.

I use CHIRP to program changes in my Ham Baofeng.

I have a DMR 6x2. It expands upon the digital aspect of communications since echoLink and D-Star networks are dying and.or drying up. Imaging talking to someone directly via DMR in another state. It can be done when both units are within range of a DMR repeater. They are expanding rapidly.
