Repeaters are also range dependent as well. For example, I cannot reach someone in Erie county through a MT Beacon repeater and vice versa.Or a repeater.
Yes, but that can still extend your range, even more if you're in an area with multiple linked repeaters.Repeaters are also range dependent as well. For example, I cannot reach someone in Erie county through a MT Beacon repeater and vice versa.
There are very few if any at least here in NYS that are linked via radio radio frequencies only. Most are linked via internet with systems like Echolink.Yes, but that can still extend your range, even more if you're in an area with multiple linked repeaters.
Or invest in a better radio that has D-star capability or the other equivalent system which I forgot the name.
I used to climb the towers for repairs .. the Dansville tower was 200 feet and the Bristol was 150 ..
I use to climb my mothers tower for her HAM rigs any time she wanted to change antennas. I'd clip my harness in once I got to the top and relax and enjoy the view. And sway if it was windy lol.No! Not sure if I was clear about that. NO! Actually, a resounding HELL NO! I like terra firma!

Here's a recommendation that is totally legal and no license is needed. You can use it to legally talk to your family and the bands aren’t crowded at all unlike FRS radios where you have kids playing around on it.
It’s a MURS radio. You get 5 channels. It has a removable antenna and you can put a whip antenna on it high up if you want to extend the range. You cannot transmit on HAM licensed bands but you can program a few HAM channels for monitoring. Maybe your local police if they are still using analog.

Sure. It’s not high quality but it’s stone simple as radios go.still recommending this for an easy one to use?
Looking for the simplest operating system.
That’s what I want.Sure. It’s not high quality but it’s stone simple as radios go.
No, I don’t believe so. I think that the 5 MURS frequencies are hard coded into it. Edit: Yeah, they are, because it's a certified MURS transmitter. That’s what I want.
can I listen to weather on it?

If you aren't 100% concerned about by the letter legality, get a BTech UV-82C instead, program in the MURS frequencies, and then you can add the NOAA ones as well (and more if you're so inclined). They are virtually identical hardware wise, and once programmed are really quite simple to operate. My kids swipe my UV-82 all the time.
"Falling feels like flying until you hit the ground"Yeah, fuck that. Just looking at pictures like that makes my balls tingle...

As do I. Programming these things via keypad is painful.I use CHIRP to program changes in my Ham Baofeng.
Holy hell, that’s a scary look-down. I’d need to have a parachute to even be close to ok with that.Yeah, fuck that. Just looking at pictures like that makes my balls tingle...
