What do you look for in a flashlight for a carbine?

I'm still thinking the Streamlight Protac HLX may be the best bang for the buck. Output isn't in the class of Modlite or CD but it is probably good enough for me.

Downside is when the Streamlight stuff fails (not the light itself but the pressure switch) Now you have to shell out the money to replace that stuff.

Is it a common issue yes and no

Definitely a concern and can only speak of personal experience. Since mounting it on my carbine I've only run about 2000 rounds through the gun and so far the the light/pressure switch is still fine.

Oh I didn't mean for the Streamlight to come off as easily to break but the weak point is just the tape switch
