What ever happened to Winchester Silvertips?

I have not seen Silvertip ammo on the shelves or catalogs for years. My favorite single cartridge was the .357 145gr JHP. I have 100 rounds left and 500 9mm bullets for reloading. Does Winchester still make this bullet or loaded ammo?

Silvertips are old technology and have probably been discontinued and replaced by something else a little more modern that performs better by Winchester like the PDX 1's.

It's kind of like the Federal Hydroshocks. They have been replaced with Federal HST's. They are still out there but aren't being produced anymore.

9mm silver tips (loaded) gave birth to the 40 s&w due to their poor performance with law enforcement.

Here is a 9mm Silvertip video. It didn't perform very well from a 4 inch barrel. From a shorter 3 inch barrel that most subcompacts have, it'll probably do worse. I couldn't find a .357 magnum test but found a .38+P Silvertip test that did even worse than the 9mm did.

I mean no offense but I would just shoot them at the range and replace them with ammo that is proven and performs well like Federal HST, Speer Gold Dots, or Winchester PDX1's. These Silvertip rounds were created before the FBI came up with parameters on how ammo should perform after experiencing real world failure with them.

Those were my dad's cartridges of choice when he was still hunting. Winchester Silver Tips in .308. A lethal combination with his trusty Remington Model 7600 (pump action rifle).

I use them in myRem 700 .270. The rifle cartridges can still be found.

I have a box of 168 grain .308 I am going to use for deer this season.
