what is a good scope for hunting for a 12 gauge?

Assuming it will be shooting slugs for deer, my favorite is 2 power leupold for woods hunting.
Ive killed a few inexpensive scopes on slug guns with their stout recoil. By a quality scope with a good warranty (that hopefully you won’t need.). You don’t need a lot of magnification for eastern deer hunting in most cases.
you can use (and I have) 2x-7x or 3x-9x variable scopes. But keep them set on lowest power. You will have time to turn up magnification if needed, where if a deer shows up in in your lap you may not have ability to move it down.
Failure of scope can comes in two ways. One is it fails to hold zero. The second is the scope fogs internally and you can’t see through it. The latter happened to me after sitting for six hours in rain when a nice buck walked out in front and bred a doe. I let the gentleman finish business but when I looked through scope it looked like it was stuffed with cotton balls. Only time I’ve watched them breed, and I pulverized that scope with a three pound sledge afterwards.

Actually after I posted it, it's a bit much because he wouldn't need the CDS-ZL, but the scope size and magnification range is relevant. Leupold offers similar scopes in the more budget friendly VX-Freedom line, but still offers quality.

Whatever you get, don’t go cheap. 12-gauge slugs knock the shit out of a scope.
