What to do.....?

Just picked up a 7.7 Jap Type 99.

Good points: Full, non-defaced mum, matching serial numbers, bright shiny bore with good rifling.

Bad: Someone attempted to sporterise (sp?) the stock and butchered it.

I could finish the stock, get a new sporter stock or replace it with an original.

It is a Series 7 Nagoya arsenal (puts it about mid '44 production).

Restore it? Sporter it? Use it as a base for a custom build?

Looking for ideas.

I vote restore back. I have a mint type 38 w/bayonet that shoots great. These rifles are a snapshot in history.. Reloading components are readily available ..restore it & shoot it!! Here's one of many......

these are really cool rifles to mess with. wife's uncle restored one from a bag of parts once and we've had a blast shooting it. Def restore it!

I am with the restore it lobby! People ruin historic firearms to "sporterize" them. If you need a deer rifle, your LGS has plenty of those.

Try gun parts in West Hurley NY, they may have an original stock for it.

Restoring it. Plenty of deer rifles in the closet. Gun parts out of stock. They were the first place I checked. Going to keep an eye on eBay and other sites to find a stock and metal. Mine has the metal butt plate and sling swivel but barrel bands, forend metal, cleaning rod (if it had one) and bayonet are gone.

It appears to be an early transition piece based on bolt handle and safety knob design.
