What's up with these shells

Organizing some ammo today and opened up these Fiocchi shells. Alot of the brass is rusting throughout the three boxes that I had. They are older but stored in dry cool area. Never opened before today. What's going on here, corrosive primers? Hadn't seen this before with shotgun shells. How do I dispose of these? About half of them seem ok, but don't want to use them.

Dispose of them? Shoot them. Then pick the hulls and throw them away as usual.

surface only, they're fine. they're likely brass coated so the base metal is probably getting a bit reactive.

Use them up.

Brass plated steel, test with a magnet. Economy shells not meant to be stored. The steel could have been starting to corrode prior to brass plating, the brass plater could have plated them too thinly.

The STS and AA hulls I reload are brass. Steel wears the MEC press prematurely. I never save my steel hulls.

Thanks some of them are really crusty rather chuck a few boxes of shells then scratch up the chamber of my shotgun. Maybe sort through them and pull out the ones that are not so bad. I'll check brass with a magnet when I get home don't think they're steel.

Your a DIY guy build one of those home depot special and pop of a few on the 4th just remove shot before hand

Just give the primers a sharp rap with a pointy tack hammer to tell if that are still good.

Well checked with magnet it is plated steel...

Give them to charity...they can eat em..or use em to keep warm. Thheyll figure something out

Just tarnishing from the tin getting slight rust.
The moisture could have been from before you bought them in the original warehouse.
It should not go through. Just clean with a schotchbrite, a rug and go enjoy shooting.

That's just on inside where shells were against. They're all like that inside.

Build a big fire in the woods, toss them in and run away.

i have some 12ga shells that are way worse .. the brass was fine .. but the lead slug oxidized and swelled up and split the case hull ..

Should have stored them with the uber clean pipe wrenches.

Lol funny you would notice that! The pipe wrenches just came back from the spa hadn't put them back yet. They were all mucked up so disassembled the jaws and cleaned them up on the grinder (wire wheel) then oiled them up before reassembling. Never looked so good!
